Young Feminists Blogging, Organizing, Kicking Ass
If you don’t know DJ Ushka yet, it is definitely in your interest to get to know her. Born Thanu Yakupitiyage in Sri Lanka, DJ Ushka is currently based out of Brooklyn (via Thailand). When she’s not working as an immigrants’ rights organizer, she’s incorporating the music and resistance of the global south into eminently danceable mixes. I had the pleasure of chatting on the phone with DJ Ushka a couple weeks ago, and we talked feminism, migration, and the ways DJs can participate in — and resist — cultural appropriation. I also asked her to pick out ten songs or videos she was feeling. She ended up giving me eleven, and you know what?

I’ve been thinking about men in women’s studies classes, and jokes about "male-bashing." This semester’s women’s studies class is like most: overwhelmingly female. I’ve got 32 women and 6 men in the class. 15 Aspects That Must Be Recognized In Third-Wave Feminism 1. There must be a widespread understanding that feminism does apply to men. Therefore, men who stand up for feminist issues may, and should, be identified as feminist. It is counterproductive and hypocritical to discuss gender equality while simultaneously creating a double standard towards males who share feminist values. (I think that the phrase "feminist male" should be dropped, as well.

In defense of the sanctimonious women's studies set. On Monday night, Donald Trump’s wife Melania touched hearts as she addressed the Republican National Convention, sharing the lessons she learned growing up as a black girl on the South Side of Chicago. As first spotted by journalist Jarrett Hill, Melania’s speech bore more than a passing resemblance to another speech at another convention about eight years ago — Michelle Obama’s 2008 address to the Democratic National Convention. The cribbed portion discussed the values that Michelle and Melania apparently share, including working hard for what you want in life and keeping your word. Why was I sent to this blog? « Finally, A Feminism 101 Blog AKA: I asked some feminists a question, and instead of answering they sent me here. Why? Last updated 2010/05/25 Your question was probably (a) not actually on-topic for the discussion they were having and/or (b) covered ground they have gone over many times before and do not wish to repeat and/or (c) has in their past experience been a question that attracts antagonists and is likely to erupt into a flamewar that they prefer to avoid.

Ubuntucat » Blog Archive » Stupid husbands and smart wives on TV If you’ve seen any American sitcoms featuring het couples in the past ten years or so, you’ll probably have noticed that it’s common for the show to portray the husbands as a stupid but endearing oaf who likes beer, barbecues, watching TV, hanging with the guys, and ogling women; and the wife as a smart, attractive, career woman who is also a housewife… and who generally just puts up with the man. Some people have tried to use this as evidence that feminism has gone too far, but I have seen no indication from feminist writers or bloggers that they approve of this dynamic. Granted, I don’t hear a lot of feminist outcry over it either, but it is worth nothing that feminists do not celebrate the gender dynamic in popular husband-wife sitcoms like King of Queens, The Simpsons, George Lopez, or Rules of Engagement. I do think the dynamic comes from a combination of sociological factors and political light-stepping, though. When is it “okay” to make fun of someone?
