Book Arts. Artists’ books have emerged as an energetic contemporary artform over the last forty years.

Book Arts

Developing from their last materialisation in the 1960s as a way of bypassing the constraints of the gallery; as a vehicle for the dissemination of ideas and a radical format of bringing art to a wider public through artists self-publishing their work. The Chopped-Up Novels and Appropriation Poetry of an Artist and Bookmaker. Surveillance Index. The Feverish Library (continued) ‘… I must ask you to join me in the disorder of crates that have been wrenched open, the air saturated with the dust of wood, the floor covered with torn paper …’ – Walter Benjamin, Unpacking My Library The Feverish Library (continued) is a group exhibition of 28 artists and, in part, a continuation of The Feverish Library, curated by Matthew Higgs and held at Petzel Gallery, New York in 2012.

The Feverish Library (continued)

That exhibition took its name from Jorge Luis Borges’ text The Library of Babel, bringing together works whose premises are predicated on the book as a conceptual, psychological, and cultural form. While several artists from the New York exhibition, amongst others Erica Baum and Robert Longo, present new works, pieces are added from mostly Berlin-based artists such as Natalie Czech, Oliver Laric and Eli Cortiñas. The range of the works reflects the breadth of the subject. While the works exhibited share a theme, their approaches to it are diverse.

Publishing as an Artistic Toolbox: 1989–2017

How have artists adapted modes of publishing as a tool for their practice? How has the notion of artists' publishing activity changed, given the ever-increasing amount of fairs and an ever-evolving number of book-related collections in contemporary art museums? Publishing has developed a favorite site and medium for aesthetic and artistic experimentation. It has also become an alternative space for promoting unrestricted individual or collective discourse. Montag ou la bibliothèque à venir - Hq. Poetics of Relation/Slippery Sessions: The Book — département arts visuels. 0x0a. Art by Translation. Art by Translation is an international research program in art and curatorial practices directed by Maud Jacquin and Sébastien Pluot.

Art by Translation

Organized in sessions dedicated to specific research themes, this itinerant program takes place at different sites in Europe and North America and develops artistic and curatorial projects, discursive events and publications in collaboration with museums, art schools and universities. In each context, research is enriched by the contributions of international artists, lecturers, doctoral and master’s students from different disciplines. Art by Translation, in close partnership with the CNEAI= art center in Pantin/Paris, and the French art schools, Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts TALM, Angers (Esba TALM) and Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Arts Paris-Cergy (ENSAPC), involves the participation of four artist-researchers who accompany the program in its different international contexts.

Reading—reading aloud, reading aloud texts authored by others (and sometimes rewriting them first)—is a creative act, a way of devising new forms of authority.

Written text is now increasingly detached from the unifying format of the book and is accessed online, circulated and reproduced digitally, viewed on myriad screens. What, in this context, might it mean to represent a text by voice alone? What does the sound of reading—alone or with a chorus—contribute, alter, or signify? The works presented in this series are reimagined by means of voice. Their authors attend to the ways in which sonic elements, a pause for (human) breath or the odd cadence of audio generated by a text-to-speech program, contribute to the sense and feeling of a written work.
