Rainbow Cake in a Jar

Rainbow Cake in a Jar
I’ve always had a penchant for sunshine in a jar. Doesn’t the very phrase itself, “sunshine in a jar,” roll off your tongue and fill your mouth with magic? While I’ve never yet found myself a sunshine in a jar, I think we may have just concocted it in our kitchen tonight. In this simple recipe, a basic white cake is turned into a slew of bright colors, baked to perfection, then topped with a creamy white frosting. Cakes baked in jars can be topped with traditional metal canning lids and stored in the fridge for up to five days. They make a great treat to ship to someone, so long as you can ensure delivery to it’s final destination within 3 days. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Truffles I’ve never liked chocolate chip cookies. Go ahead and throw tomatoes at me if you’d like, but I don’t like ’em. They’re just a plain old cookie, after all, with a few studs of chocolate chips in them. They’re nothing special to me, unless you get some cookie dough-action before it meets its fate in the oven. Now you’re talkin’. I’d much rather drown my sorrows in a bowl of cookie dough than nibble a dozen “cookies” dipped in milk. Banana Split Bites Banana Split Bites ~ A classic ice cream dessert gets mini for some bite size fun. And yes, there is actually a tiny scoop of ice cream tucked inside and underneath the whip cream of those little darlings. Banana Split Mini Bites For once I made something mini for portion control and not just for the cute factor. My little guy had some friends over the other day and of course with a mom who is a baker, the expectation is dessert will not only be good but it will be fun. And I was asked, by friend Caroline, not to let her boys eat too much dessert.

Easter Kit Kat Cake Easter Kit Kat Cake I’ve had this cake planned for weeks to bring to work for Easter. I couldn’t wait for them to see my Easter Kit Kat Cake. After my cousin posted a similar cake on Facebook, I thought it was the cutest ever. Today’s post is a lesson in improvisation. Why? Well, this project was INTENDED to be a candy tray, a fancy version of something I saw done flawlessly at Tutto Bella. After reading through that tutorial, I thought it would be a breeze! Famous last words, right?

Chocolate Guinness Cupcakes with Whiskey and Baileys The only way a good stout beer, whiskey, and Irish cream liquor could be better is if they were mixed together - a la an Irish Car Bomb. Better still though, would be mixing it all up with some chocolate in the form of rich Guinness chocolate cupcakes, filled with Jameson chocolate ganache, and topped with Bailys buttercream frosting. Variations on this recipe can be found on loads of amazing food blogs like Smitten Kitchen, the Busty Baker, and others! Note: These do contain some booze that isn't cooked off, so please be careful (no heavy machinery, etc.) and keep them away from the youngsters. Also Note: "Irish Car Bomb" is a pretty horrible thing to call a drink or a cupcake.

What happens when a writer and a photographer get together to make delicious food. Last episode of “Smitty & The Girl” Elvira tried not to stare. “Hunh.” The redhead was related to Sylvia? “Mathers, you said your last name was?” Bold Book Shelving Branches Naturally Along Interior Walls Want to bring a bit of nature inside, but not have to worry about watering the plants or picking up after the leaves? Well, this branched, tree-shaped bookcase might be just the thing. One hung from the wall itself, simple biscuit joints connect ever-smaller branches that spoke out from the primary limb, providing niches for books, odds and ends in the void spaces Olivier Dollé creates along the way. Abstractly, they are simply attractive organic forms, turning a blank wall into something bordering on artistic – practically, they avoid the one-size-fits all mandate of regularly-stacked shelves where each level provides an enclosed box with the same height and width as the one below it.

My I-thought-I-had-an-original-idea ice cream cone cupcake pan Don’t you hate it when you get all your ice cream cones filled with batter only to have them tip over and spill in the pan when you try to put them in the oven? I decided to make a pan prototype to bake my cones in to stop the spills and mess! Yup, I made a prototype. Fried Ice Cream I'm sure you are thinking about Cinco de Mayo this very minute. You should be because it's in two days. We look for any excuse to celebrate. We look for any excuse to celebrate with food. This year I thought Chocolate Mousse This is a serious dessert mousse, friends. A chocolate experience so rich, velvety and decadent, a few tablespoons is really all that any one person needs. I usually chuckle when I watch Mrs. Pastry eat chocolate bars, because she nibbles them like a mouse, savoring every tiny morsel. However even I — a man known to wolf chocolate bars down by the handful — eat this only incrementally, off the tip of a spoon.

Stress relief… When I am sad and stressed I just pick up my chin and grin and say…the sun will come out (SLAP! Not). Okay, where was I. Ah yes, being sad and stressed. When I am not having the best of days I used to follow a certain routine. First I would exercise.
