Books Shorter than a novel, but longer than a magazine article -- a TED Book is a great way to feed your craving for ideas anytime. TED Books are short original electronic books produced by TED Conferences. Like the best TED Talks, they're personal and provocative, and designed to spread great ideas. TED Books are typically under 20,000 words — long enough to unleash a powerful narrative, but short enough to be read in a single sitting. Two ways to get TED Books Four Questions with Seth Priebatsch, Creator of LevelUp If you’ve grabbed a meal downtown or off a food truck and didn’t pay with cash or a card, there’s a good chance Seth Priebatsch had a hand in that purchase. Seth’s invention, LevelUp, has changed the way we pay for things. I asked him how it all works and the future of paying for stuff with our phones. What’s LevelUp and how does it work? LevelUp is the easiest way to pay with your phone at your favorite local businesses and save. Basically you just download the free LevelUp app for iPhone, Android or Windows and link your favorite credit or debit card.

A Quick Guide to Using HTML5 Forms Web forms are everywhere—contact forms, comment forms, sign up forms—these days you’d be hard pressed to find a website without a form. Sadly, HTML wasn’t originally developed with forms in mind and working with forms on the web is more difficult than it should be. Even something as basic as adding a date-picker to a search form requires JavaScript. But HTML5 forms will change that.

HTML5 Design Gallery - Eye Styles There is a lot of interactivity on this site, primarily through mouseovers, using CSS3 features. The HEADER element is used a lot—arguably more than is required. PLoS Collections: Article collections published by the Public Library of Science The healthy adult body hosts ten times as many microbial cells as human cells, including bacteria, archaea, viruses, and eukaryotic microbes resident on nearly every body surface. The metagenome carried collectively by these microbial communities dwarfs the human genome in size, and their influences on normal development, diet and obesity, immunity, and disease are under active research. Funded by the National Institutes of Health Common Fund, the Human Microbiome Project (HMP) was established to provide a comprehensive baseline of the microbial diversity at 18 different human body sites. This includes reference genomes of host-associated microbial isolates, 16S rRNA marker gene sequencing for thousands of healthy microbiomes, 3.5Tb of metagenomic sequences, assemblies, and metabolic reconstructions, and a catalogue of over 5M microbial genes.

TEDxSF - A Curation Of People And Ideas... Posted by Tom Foremski - June 5, 2011 I've been to several TEDxSF events but the most recent one felt like a breakthrough event because of the mix of people and talks, plus the new venue. The event was sold out with about 650 tickets for the Yerba Buena location, a larger theater than the Academy of Sciences, where it used to be held. The mix of people was eclectic as always. There were at least two or three talks where I wished for the return of the old Vaudeville stage hook, or maybe a remote controlled trapdoor.

The Digital Public Library of America: adding gravitas to your Internet search One year ago, a group of professors, librarians, and futurists gathered in San Francisco to discuss how they would go about building a Digital Public Library of America. There were still many questions about the project, which had millions of dollars in charitable funding but hadn’t yet meted out a complete vision of its incarnation. The directors cited Europeana and Wikipedia as examples, but they weren’t sure how a digital library would tackle the problems unique to using published content in America. Despite the hurdles ahead, the founders of the DPLA promised at that conference that a live website would launch in April 2013, come hell or high water. The founders of the DPLA made good on their promise this week.
