Rediscover your favorite memories

Rediscover your favorite memories
During the last few months a number of our Memolane fans have requested that we support Pinterest. For those of you that are unfamiliar with this service, it is basically a virtual pinboard where you can organize craft ideas, recipes, and your favorite inspirational pictures found on the web. One of our fans, Carrie McGann, has in fact found a way to elegantly display her curated Pinterest boards using Memolane. I was lucky enough to speak with her about how she was able to create stunning lanes. Think your Pinterest board is good enough to be featured on Memolane? Find out how and get all the pointers from Carrie in our interview below:

Visual Thinking Evolution A mind map is a diagram used to represent words, ideas, tasks, or other items linked to and arranged around a central key word or idea. Especially in British English, the terms spidergram and spidergraph are more common,[1] but they can cause confusion with the term spider diagram used in mathematics and logic. Mind maps are used to generate, visualize, structure, and classify ideas, and as an aid to studying and organizing information, solving problems, making decisions, and writing.

A story have staying power I assume that the Sept. 11 attacks will have an effect on people for decades to come. I often associate this effect with the assassination of JFK, another story that keeps evolving. And now, once again, on the 100th anniversary of its sinking, the Titanic is a story of interest. The ship may still sit on the bottom of the Atlantic, but fascination with it is all around us.

Characteristics of a ‘good story’ I get this question a lot these days: What makes a story a story? Every time I think I know the answer, someone changes the question. Can you really tell stories in newspapers? Is there a place for storytelling in blogs and on websites?

5 Tools For Making Custom Timelines Creating custom timelines is an age old school project, especially for history classes (since history is basically a giant timeline, after all!) Way back in the day, when I was a student, I remember drawing out my timelines with colored pencils on pieces of taped together construction paper (to make the line long enough). We’ve come a long way since the late ’80′s, and there are a lot of web tools and apps out there that help users make much more advanced timelines than I could crank out with my awesome colored pencils.

Get the name of the dog Our dog Rex, a Jack Russell terrier, turned 18 years old this week. He was mentioned in The New York Times a few years ago; I was quoted as saying that my wife Karen and I loved that dog more than we loved each other. More on the consequences of that quote later. For now, I will use Rex’s birthday to return to the first writing tool I learned at the newspaper previously known as the St. Petersburg Times. Reporters, I was told by the brass, must never come home from a story without the name of the dog.
