Un échange d'espions sans précédent depuis la fin de la guerre froide s'est achevé vendredi à l'aéroport de Vienne où les États-Unis ont remis à la Russie ses dix agents contre quatre Russes dont trois condamnés pour espionnage au profit des Occidentaux. Dans un final digne de la Guerre froide, l'échange est intervenu sur le tarmac de l'aéroport de Vienne. L'avion transportant les espions russes expulsés des États-Unis dans la nuit a atterri vendredi à l'aéroport moscovite de Domodedovo à 15 h 46, heure française, a indiqué une porte-parole de l'aéroport. Selon des médias britanniques, l'avion avec quatre agents relâchés par Moscou a atterri sur la base Brize Norton de la Royal Air Force, à Oxfordshire, dans le sud de l'Angleterre.
L'échange des agents a eu lieu vendredi après-midi à l'aéroport de Vienne, haut lieu de l'espionnage durant la guerre froide. Mais l'esprit de suspicion qui régnait autrefois entre Russes et Américains n'était plus que l'ombre de lui- même. Le scénario écrit rapidement en coulisse par les autorités américaines et russes au cours des derniers jours s'est déroulé comme prévu. Quelques heures après le troc, les dix espions russes arrêtés par les autorités américaines le 28 juin atterrissaient à Moscou. Ils avaient quitté New York jeudi soir, tout de suite après un procès expéditif dans lequel ils avaient tous reconnu avoir participé à une «conspiration pour agir en tant qu'agent d'un gouvernement étranger sans être dûment enregistré».
