The Jealous Curator

The Jealous Curator
Obsessive consumption, rule-based projects, impostor syndrome, telling our inner a**hole where to go, and “making piles of crap” because that’s the only way you get better. Oh. This woman. So smart, so funny, so talented. I’m talking to Portland based illustrator/educator Kate Bingaman-Burt … she always has a ton of cool things on the go, so I am slightly stunned that I was able to get her for the podcast. She tucked herself away in a quiet corner of her office at school, and we talked and talked and talked {we went a little longer than normal!}. Yep, she drew {and shared} all of her credit card statements until her debt was paid off. Gah! So. Post-its. ps.

EMPTY KINGDOM TOP 100 Artists of 2013 [Photo by: Shelbie Dimond] 939 is the magic number for EK in 2013. 939 only has 4 factors: 1, 3, 313, 939…which doesn’t really have any significant meaning relating to our TOP 100. AMD made a CPU called the Socket 939 back in June 2004…but we’re not sponsored by them nor any other computer tech company to supply us with the machines that we need to run EK. The year 939 in Roman numerals is CMXXXIX…which doesn’t mean crap since none of us use Roman numerals anymore. According to HistoryOrb.com, 4 major events took place in year 939 that were documented:July 8th (The Major Occultation, or Ghaybat el-Kubra of Muhammad al-Mahdi),August 6th (Battle at Simancas – Spain beats Moors),October 2nd (Battle at Andernach: King Otto & Hermann of Zwaben beat Eberhard of France & Giselbert of Lutherans),October 27th (Edmund I succeeds Athelstan as King of England)…which all has nothing to do with EK.

Creative Inspiration: Process & Materials Today’s dose of creative inspiration comes from the latest exhibit over in Gallery 543 at the Navy Yard. The title, “Finished exploration of process and material to find special finishes and fixtures for future projects,” is a bit of a mouthful – but it sums up the array of materials and patterns that grace the walls as we walk to our cafeteria each day. I can’t get enough of all the different textures and patterns in this exhibit , which is the work of the UO Store Design Build & Environment teams. From the paint spattered table to the plywood god’s eyes, it’s a fascinating way to look at materials we see every day in a new way. Blog Love Hans’ Instagram photos? Be sure to check out his @89plus project with fellow curator @simoncastets. The project aims to support emerging artists born in the year 1989 or after with sustained stipends, grants and residencies. Hans Ulrich Obrist (@hansulrichobrist) of the Serpentine Gallery in London (@serpentineuk) is one of the art world’s leading curators and perhaps its most creative Instagrammer.

Read The Art Damien Hirst Stole Part 2 here Friendly Forest for St Georges Hospital Children's Emergency Department. As 2012 comes to a close I wanted to show you a very special project that we managed to fit in this year. I was asked to design a wall mural for the corridor of the Children's Emergency Department of St Georges Hospital, London. The work had to be uplifting for kids of all ages with things going on at lots of different height levels. The corridor changes in width, and leads from the reception to different parts of the hospital. I thought it would be nice if the wall was lined with curious looking trees.

my studio CLICK HERE to be taken to all posts regarding my studio and glass work Welcome to my glass studio! Soon I will be able to manipulate glass in my back yard, 8x6 studio. I will be making pendants, marbles, paperweights, and my ultimate goal is to have my own line of glass plugs and body jewelry. This little "hut" in my back yard took many many hours of labor and love to build.
