So, What is SU? The Reason So Many Analytics Efforts Fall Short Given the role analytics has played in reshaping industries and rewarding innovative adopters over the last two decades, it is surprising how frequently we are asked: “Does this analytics stuff really work?” More often than not, the reason for the skepticism is prior efforts that did not produce the expected competitive advantage. Such skepticism led us to study the impact that analytics has had on our clients over the last 20 years. Our surprising finding: Efforts to adopt analytics upset the balance of power in the C-suite, and this shift often had a negative impact on analytics initiatives. Given the myriad other factors buffeting companies at any given time, the design of our assessment was intentionally simple. We only included companies that had implemented a major analytics initiative with an innovation or similar agenda.

What is the Balanced Scorecard? The balanced scorecard is a strategic planning and management system that is used extensively in business and industry, government, and nonprofit organizations worldwide to align business activities to the vision and strategy of the organization, improve internal and external communications, and monitor organization performance against strategic goals. It was originated by Drs. Robert Kaplan (Harvard Business School) and David Norton as a performance measurement framework that added strategic non-financial performance measures to traditional financial metrics to give managers and executives a more 'balanced' view of organizational performance.

Lessons from Becoming a Data-Driven Organization Chapter 1 How the Data-Driven Organization Takes Shape The data-driven organization can be pictured as a pyramid that rests on a base of well-governed data, partnerships, and sustained commitment from leadership and employees alike. With that foundation in place, the organization can move to the next level, where it treats data as a core asset that is an essential element of strategy, fashions its data into commercial offerings, and uses it to deepen the engagement of employees and customers.

But if you're trying to extract useful information from an ever-increasing inflow of data, you'll likely find visualization useful -- whether it's to show patterns or trends with graphics instead of mountains of text, or to try to explain complex issues to a nontechnical audience. There are many tools around to help turn data into graphics, but they can carry hefty price tags. Matching technology: Optimize your HR department’s recruitment process C'est votre première visite ? Automating big-data analysis Last year, MIT researchers presented a system that automated a crucial step in big-data analysis: the selection of a “feature set,” or aspects of the data that are useful for making predictions. The researchers entered the system in several data science contests, where it outperformed most of the human competitors and took only hours instead of months to perform its analyses. This week, in a pair of papers at the IEEE International Conference on Data Science and Advanced Analytics, the team described an approach to automating most of the rest of the process of big-data analysis — the preparation of the data for analysis and even the specification of problems that the analysis might be able to solve.
