BluSphere - Sleek Linux Pre-Installed Computers I have been frequenting Linux message boards and chat rooms for several years now. During my time spent in these places I would estimate that 95% of the issues I have helped people with (and seen posted) are related to the installation and setup of the operating system. This comes largely from the fact that most of the computers you can buy come with Windows by default. The experienced Linux user knows that they need to research their hardware before forking out their hard earned money for something that might not work too well with their favorite operating system. Where does that leave those that don't know which hardware they should be looking for or don't feel like spending time searching for Linux-friendly hardware setups?

WindowsDualBoot This page describes how to set up your computer in order to dual boot Ubuntu and Windows. Although this may seem obvious, it is important to back up your files to an external backup medium before attempting a dual-boot installation (or any other hard drive manipulation), in case your hard drive becomes corrupted during the process. External hard drives, USB flash drives, and multiple DVDs or CDs are all useful for this purpose. Some computer manufacturers that pre-install Windows provide a Windows recovery/re-installation CD or DVD with the computer. However, many companies no longer ship a physical disc but instead create a hidden partition on the hard drive in which the recovery-disk information is stored. A utility is then usually provided which allows the user to burn a recovery/re-installation CD or DVD from it.

Aide Framasphere/Diaspora When you start writing a message with one of more of these icons highlighted, a character counter will show how many more characters are available to you: 280 for Twitter, 1000 for Tumblr, 63,206 for Facebook. In diaspora*, you can post a whopping 65,535 characters! The counter will always display the number of characters remaining for the service selected which allows the fewest characters; so, if you highlight both the Twitter and Facebook logos, it will count down from 280 characters. If your message is longer than the figure allowed by the service you’re posting to, your message will appear truncated on that service, with a link to your post in diaspora*. How about that?

My girlfriend saw a mention of the website Tutor.com. They offer a web based tutoring service for high school students. I have a fair bit of tutoring experience (and I am a certified high school teacher for mathematics in Illinois) so I figured I was more than qualified for their online tutoring position.

(Page 1) / Multimedia and Games Multiple programs on my system are unable to use sound at the same time. When any two programs that are supposed to output sound run together, the program that started the output first prevents the other from outputing. I read the Wiki page on ALSA, but have had no luck so far in identifying the problem. I do believe that I am using alsa, as the sound of the program with sound does change as I adjust the alsa mixer volumes.

HowTo: Create Wine Application Shortcuts on Ubuntu I use the Ubuntu partition on my laptop as my main/work desktop and I barely use Windows because I have all the programs and applications I need on Ubuntu even Windows programs like Adobe Photoshop. Running Photoshop on Ubuntu is made possible by Wine, a software that lets users install Windows software on other operating systems like Ubuntu, Mandriva, SUSE, FreeBSD, Solaris and OpenSolaris and run these applications like it was on Windows. Once installed, Wine applications can be accessed via Applications > Wine > Programs. What I don’t like about this is, I don’t want to go through that process everytime I want to open a Wine application. I want to have a desktop shortcut that will give me a faster and easier way to access a Wine app. Installing Windows applications with Wine is fast and easy but creating shortcuts isn’t.
