Student Directed Planning: Fostering Student Ownership In Learning Exploring ways to motivate young students to learn is a never ending quest for educators. Literature suggests that the need to motivate students today is greater than in the past. Teachers at all levels have made efforts to motivate students and to enhance their learning by developing incentive programs, fostering self concepts and by establishing positive classroom environments. Many of these efforts have met with some success and have given momentum to the exploration of additional strategies to motivate and enhance student learning. Student Directed Planning is a practical classroom strategy that trains students to take ownership for their learning. The primary goal of the strategy is to have young students become motivated to learn by including them in the HOW of the learning process.

Success Begins with Effective Design When I started doing project-based learning with my students, I noticed two immediate changes in my classroom. First, my students were far more interested in doing projects based on the content we were learning than they were in simply listening to me give a lecture on the topic. Second, attendance went up and classroom problems went down. These factors contributed to a higher degree of interest and involvement in what we were learning than I had ever had before. Our first projects were simple and not very technically oriented. The students quickly learned that planning was the most critical part of the project process.

(Updated 11/2013) Educational author and former teacher, Dr. Michael Schmoker shares in his book, Results Now, a study that found of 1,500 classrooms visited, 85 percent of them had engaged less than 50 percent of the students. They might play small games or free games, but for most women, buying a triple-A console blockbuster for themselves is out of the question. I haven't done any research on the issue, but I'm pretty up to speed on our shibboleths, and I know that's what a lot of developers think. (Of course, women in the game industry spend money on games, but they're atypical.) Imagine my bogglement, then, when Brandii Grace informed me at the 2012 Game Developers' Conference that she is founding a company to make triple-A games for women.
