SEO for Non-dicks I recently read an account of John McElborough’s talk at Brighton SEO 2011, wherein he advocated some ethically questionable SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) tactics involving creating a private network of fake blogs. I don’t know John or his work, but this entire side of internet marketing and promotion makes me sad – and a bit angry. I fully acknowledge the value of, and need for, actual SEO; I just think that in many cases, the tactics employed under that title would better be described as Search Engine Manipulation or even Abuse.

WTF is SEO? Ever had a massive, life-changing epiphany? Me neither. However, I’ve slowly reached the conclusion that we’re doing SEO all wrong. Not in the do-real-marketing sense, or the we-need-to-change-the-name sense. GrowthHackers - Premier Growth Community Hi Sophie - that's awesome you're seeing cross-functional growth teams from the get go! How Google's Panda Update Changed SEO Best Practices Forever - Whiteboard Friday It's here! Google has released Panda update 2.2, just as Matt Cutts said they would at SMX Advanced here in Seattle a couple of weeks ago. This time around, Google has - among other things - improved their ability to detect scraper sites and banish them from the SERPs. Of course, the Panda updates are changes to Google's algorithm and are not merely manual reviews of sites in the index, so there is room for error (causing devastation for many legitimate webmasters and SEOs).

Startup Dispatch In September 2011, Matt Gemmell wrote an article, SEO for Non-Dicks . The gist of that article is this: be nice, write well, write often, and don’t fuck up the titles. It’s a good general guide for the SEO-clueless, though you could do far better by hanging out at the SEOMoz blog for a couple of weeks. The obverse exists as well: SEO for dicks. It essentially takes the gist of Matt’s approach, chews it up and vomits it out as a nauseating mess of link farms, spam, spun content, and general bullshit. I don’t encourage it, neither do I advocate it.

Hummingbird Ups The Search Ante So, Thursday September 26th, Google has revealed the fact that a new algorithm has been running for a month. For people not in the industry, you may wonder why there had not been more guessing or supposition from the SEO community. As one of the search engine optimization professionals at My Favorite Web Designs who deals with the constant whims and vicissitudes of the Google engine updates, I can attest that it does not matter too much what it is called, just what it portends. According to the BBC article, this update utilized almost an AI – a computer algorithm that understands the interconnectedness of concepts and ideas, and thereby simulates something very akin to human understanding in its ability to associate concepts. Now, I am the first person I know using the word AI for hummingbird, but I have been assuming this would be the wave of the future. Now, is it a true AI, or a sentient self aware artificial intelligence?

How to Build Links Like an Engineer The approach you used two years ago to builds links is most likely drastically different than the approach you take now. As search engines have changed what they are looking for, the efforts we make as link builders have changed as well. It is becoming more common for "link building" campaigns to be built containing efforts around social media, paid promotional efforts, content creation and possibly even traditional media. To develop a program that involves multiple channels and efforts can be complicated.
