Cortado Desktop Services. Cortado's Henning Volkmer spent a few minutes bringing me up to date on what his company has been doing since our last conversation.

Cortado Desktop Services

Cortado, which started life as Thin Print, has expanded its scope of operation from thinking about virtualizing the printing process to a number of other services that are supported by a sophisticated device to server communications service. The list today includes BYOD support, supporting virtual desktops, Cloud printing, and mobile device security. Then he went on to speak about the company's cloud desktop, Cortado Workplace, that is designed to allow just about any device that has a Web Browser that supports HTML5 to access files; access to a number of desktop features; mobile printing and faxing; and also offers 2 GBytes of free storage. Cortado's products today focus on providing access, managing that access, maintaining an inventory of devices that access data and applications and using policy-based management to offer a secure environment.

The maturing of open source software (OSS) and increasing support from mainstream IT vendors mean that cloud architectures built using OSS tools will grow on companies looking to avoid vendor lock-in, but they will need to assess whether they have the internal know-how to manage such deployments.

Enterprises see growing open source cloud appeal

Arun Chandrasekaran, research director at Gartner, said the term "open source cloud" is a generic one referring to cloud computing framworks developed or based on open source technologies. This essentially enables enterprises to architect cloud environments that offer a wider compatibility with the hardware and software available in the market. Dirk-Peter van Leeuwen, vice president and general manager at Red Hat Asia-Pacific, added to the definition by saying the open source cloud translates to freedom in three aspects. Customers will have the freedom to control their implementations, as well as be unfettered by technological and business paths determined by IT vendors. Dropbox trials two-factor authentication beta. A few weeks ago, when Dropbox users began reporting that their emails had been leaked to spam lists, Dropbox made some security changes and promised it would bolster its security measures further.

Dropbox trials two-factor authentication beta

The company has now made good on its promise, rolling out the beta version of a two-factor authentication system over the weekend. The "experimental feature" requires logged-in users to visit an opt-in URL, which will switch on a two-factor authentication option in their account's security panel. There are no hardware tokens for the system. Instead, users can choose to enter their mobile phone number in order to have codes sent via SMS each time they attempt to log-in. Alternatively, users can use an app to retrieve tokens. Autodesk struggles with cloud turn, to restructure after weak Q2. Autodesk missed second quarter sales expectations by a wide margin and the company said it would restructure and lock down expenses as it tried to position its business better for cloud computing.

Autodesk struggles with cloud turn, to restructure after weak Q2

The design and engineering software maker reported second quarter earnings of 28 cents a share on revenue of $569 million, up 4 percent from a year ago. Non-GAAP earnings were 48 cents a share. Wall Street was expecting second quarter earnings of 49 cents a share on revenue of $593 million. That sales miss translated into Autodesk shares plunging 21 percent in afterhours trading. In addition, the third quarter outlook wasn't good either. Wall Street was expecting third quarter earnings of 50 cents a share on revenue of $601 million.

Autodesk CEO Carl Bass said the company was hit with "our own execution challenges, combined with an uneven global economy. " vCenter Operations Manager: VMware's move into cloud monitoring? Is VMware slowly becoming the new Oracle?

Amazon launched its Glacier storage service on Tuesday, aiming to entice enterprises to put their data in its cloud.

AWS Glacier's dazzling price benefits melt next to the cost of tape

But how does the cost of the new cloud archival service stack up against a typical on-premise tape installation? Werner Vogels, Amazon's chief technology officer, said in a blog post this week that Glacier's price of $0.01 per gigabyte per month made it "extremely cost-effective", and also explicitly described Glacier as an alternative to "cold data storage systems such as tape robots and tape libraries". But is it that much of an alternative? To find out, I asked tape specialist Quantum to give me a breakdown of the cost of storing 10PB in tape systems over five years. The total cost of storing 10PB over five years with the company would work out at $669,663.70 (€533,341.61) in total — or $133,932.70 (€106,772.53) per year, Quantum told me. Microsoft to deliver its new small-business server by end of 2012. Microsoft already started rolling out the final versions of most of its Windows Server 2012 SKUs this month. The last of them -- Windows Server 2012 Essentials, which is its small/mid-size business server -- will be out before year-end , officials said this week. Windows Server 2012 Essentials is Microsoft's intended replacement for Windows Small Business Server and Windows Home Server (for those SMBs who were using WHS for business purposes). The Essentials product is a hybrid on-premises/cloud server. Ten ways Workday looks like the Apple for enterprise.

Despite having had a preview of some aspects of Workday 17, nothing could have prepared me for what I heard and saw on the analyst call when Workday announced the details of the latest release. As Stan Swete, CTO, orchestrated the call and demo, I started to get the sense the company has been taking lessons from the Stevenotes playbook. Here's how it happened. The call was divided into three sections. Tencent to offer Internet TV in China. Tencent plans to introduce a television for users to access its online games and videos on another platform device besides computers and mobile handsets. According to a Bloomberg report on Thursday, the 26-inch flat screen TV, named Ice Screen, will enable consumers to access Tencent's Web services via cloud computing, said company CEO Pony Ma. The device will be powered by Google's Android operating system (OS) and is expected to go on sale in China this September at 1,999 yuan (US$314.60), it added.

TCL Multimedia Technology was its manufacturing partner, marking the Chinese Web giant's first collaboration with an appliance maker, Ma said in the report. The TV business is not the only focus for Tencent. It had earlier revealed it is stepping up the development of services including Mobile QQ and Weixin messaging tools for smartphone and tablet users, and also bolstered its online games collaboration with companies such as Activision Blizzard (ATV) and Zynga. VMware CTO: How the software-defined datacenter benefits enterprises. Get the latest announcements about VMware's cloud strategy and solutions by tuning into VMware NOW, the new online destination for breaking news, product announcements, videos, and demos at: In advance of next week's VMworld conference in San Francisco, I recently sat down with Steve Herrod, Chief Technology Officer and Senior Vice President of Research & Development at VMware.

A top technology leader at VMware, Herrod has championed this vision of the software-defined datacenter and how the next generation of foundational IT innovation is largely being implemented above the hardware. For example, those who are now building and managing datacenters are gaining heightened productivity, delivering far better performance, and enjoying greater ease in operations and management -- all thanks to innovations at the software-infrastructure level. Node.js set to land on Engine Yard's PaaS. Node.js is set to land on the Engine Yard platform-as-a-service, giving customers access to a scalable language that has been adopted by companies such as Microsoft, eBay and LinkedIn. The language went into general availability for the PaaS on Tuesday, and it should be accessible to Engine Yard customers within 30 days, the company announced in a statement.

The addition of Node.js sees Engine Yard close its language gap with platform-rival Heroku. It now lacks Scala, Clojure and Python, compared with Heroku, but it has PHP, and shares Java, Ruby and Node.js with its rival. "With support for additional frameworks like Node.js, our engineering team has increased flexibility and choice when building and deploying Web and mobile apps," Patrick Ezell, principal of digital agency Copius, an Engine Yard customer, said in Engine Yard's statement. Digital Post begins life after Australia Post court battle. Digital Post Australia has launched its digital mailbox services on an invite-only basis, three days after claiming victory against Australia Post in the Federal Court over its trading name. Australia Post had tried to ban the company from trading under Digital Post, but failed earlier this week when the Federal Court dismissed the court case, where it accused Digital Post of misleading conduct for choosing a business name similar to its own.

As the name suggests, Digital Post can deliver a digital replica of physical documents that are sent to a users' postal address. The digital mail can be viewed from any web-connected device, such as a smartphone. The private launch was only opened to employees of businesses that have signed up to deliver digital postal mail. These include a number of financial, utility and investor service companies. The digital mailbox will be rolled out to the public later this year, but people can register their interest at www.digitalpost.com.au. 5 areas most likely to be outsourced in IT: survey. The IT outsourcing market is growing, according to a new survey of 200 IT executives released by Bluewolf. That's because companies are increasingly relying on outsourcers for IT talent needs. The survey finds 48% of companies will hire more contractors, rather than seek full-time staff, to meet growing IT needs in the next 12-18 months. Overall, about a third of the organizations in the survey, 32%, plan to increase their levels of IT outsourcing investments in the year ahead.
