I'm not talking deep-dish Chicago-style with its crisp crust and rivers of cheese and sauce, I'm talking thick-crusted, fried-on-the-bottom, puffy, cheesy, focaccia-esque pan pizza of the kind that you might remember Pizza Hut having when you were a kid, though in reality, most likely that pizza never really existed—as they say, pizzas past always look better through pepperoni-tinted glasses. It would arrive at the table in a jet black, well-worn pan, its edges browned and crisped where the cheese has melted into the gap between the crust and the pan.

Homemade strawberry jam is nectar of the gods. Better than chocolate and almost as divine as my mother-in-law’s cherry cheesecake.
It’s our second year making jam. And as far as we’re concerned, it will continue to be a summer ritual until we’re too feeble to stir. This year we headed out to a little farm in Amherstburg, Ontario that sells pick-your-own pesticide-free strawberries. The night after berry picking, we hulled the berries. The next morning we set up a canning station in the kitchen. " The problem is the word itself. It's used as a synonym for grilling, refers to the grill itself, or to the meat being grilled; it also has a sauce named after it; and sometimes it's just the word for the party itself held outdoors in somebody's backyard. What, actually, is "barbecue"? American purists see things a little differently. To them, "barbecue" is a wonderful Southern tradition of slow-cooking with indirect heat and woodsmoke to transform cuts of meat, often inexpensive ones, into succulent, unbelievably delicious results. That's true barbecue. Anything else on a grill cooked hot and fast rather than low and slow is called grilling. Which brings us to barbecue chicken, a staple of the summer grill.

If food is love, Americans must love their kids a lot.
About one-third of children and adolescents in the U.S. are overweight or obese. And our emotional response to food may be one of the reasons so many kids eat so much, according to a poll by NPR, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health. The poll found that in more than a quarter of families, food is considered an important way to show affection. That result is no surprise to Carol Cassie, who lives in Great Falls, Mont.
"I wanted my customers to know as soon as they came into the restaurant that I was caring for them," says Cassie, who is also the author of Mama Cassie's "Food is Love! " Just plain gluttony? Simple vegetable side dishes. I have made up for a childhood of hating most vegetables in adulthood and love them in abundance. In summer I want salads at most meals, and in winter I love cooked vegetables. My favourite way of eating vegetables in winter is simply oven roasted mixed vegetables. Olive oil, garlic (or not), herbs, salt (or smoked salt) and then to roast them until the outer flesh is slightly caramelised and the inner flesh is nice and soft. You know you’ve done something right with broccoli when the person you made it for describes it to someone else the next day as “better than biting into a steak.” Those were Craig’s words and they were a marked change from the first words he uttered about the broccoli, before he bit in: “You made broccoli for dinner?
Broccoli and sweet potatoes?” Then he did bite in and his eyes lit up. “Oh my God,” he said. “This is the best broccoli I’ve ever had in my life.” Later he said: “If parents made this broccoli for their kids, kids wouldn’t hate broccoli. They’d beg for it.” So what did I do to the broccoli to make it taste so good? I can’t take any credit. I was debating whether or not to just call for pizza- ugh- pizza…again? I’d sit in front of my computer for 5 minutes looking up “vintage luichiny platforms” on google (if they’re not luichiny from the 90′s they’re no good), and then I’d scurry back into the kitchen to see if I could wing a meal with the ingredients I had on hand.
I’d be going back and forth about 10 times before I could even make a decision. This drives me nuts. Just as I was reluctantly about to call for pizza (dominos thin crust …shriek……too..much..salt), I saw all these potatoes lying around and suddenly I had an idea to make a potato pizza…I love pizza but I was also getting tired of it.
