Sustainable city A sustainable city, or eco-city is a city designed with consideration of environmental impact, inhabited by people dedicated to minimization of required inputs of energy, water and food, and waste output of heat, air pollution - CO2, methane, and water pollution. Richard Register first coined the term "ecocity" in his 1987 book, Ecocity Berkeley: Building Cities for a Healthy Future. Other leading figures who envisioned the sustainable city are architect Paul F Downton, who later founded the company Ecopolis Pty Ltd, and authors Timothy Beatley and Steffen Lehmann, who have written extensively on the subject. The field of industrial ecology is sometimes used in planning these cities.
Israel's Kibbutz Lotan: Going Back in Time in Order to Find The Future - Garden Collage “In order to think out of a box, you can’t live in a box. Something about living in a round place makes us think differently.” Alex Cicelsky, a program director at Kibbutz Lotan, is talking about the 10 geodesic domes on the kibbutz. These domes are arranged side-by-side and are part of Lotan’s Eco-Campus, a representation and embodiment of the values of Israel’s Kibbutz Lotan as a whole: community, creativity, sustainability, innovation, and fun.
Moving toward a circular economy The circular economy aims to eradicate waste—not just from manufacturing processes, as lean management aspires to do, but systematically, throughout the life cycles and uses of products and their components. Indeed, tight component and product cycles of use and reuse, aided by product design, help define the concept of a circular economy and distinguish it from the linear take–make–dispose economy, which wastes large amounts of embedded materials, energy, and labor. In the first exhibit of this narrated slideshow, McKinsey alumnus Markus Zils explains how a circular economy works. In the second, he uses the example of a market for power drills to detail four scenarios in which circular-economy principles are applied: In the status-quo scenario, 1,000 power drills are made in China and sold in the European Union.

What are the 10 biggest global challenges? Whether it’s turning promises on climate change into action, rebuilding trust in the financial system, or connecting the world to the internet, the World Economic Forum has singled out 10 key global challenges that, if they are to be addressed, require cooperation from the public and private sectors. Here is a guide to the 10 challenges, and why they matter to the world. By 2050, the world must feed 9 billion people. Yet the demand for food will be 60% greater than it is today. To achieve these objectives we will need to address a host of issues, from gender parity and ageing populations to skills development and global warming.

Sustainability Achieving sustainability will enable the Earth to continue supporting human life. In ecology, sustainability is how biological systems remain diverse and productive. Long-lived and healthy wetlands and forests are examples of sustainable biological systems. In more general terms, sustainability is the endurance of systems and processes. The organizing principle for sustainability is sustainable development, which includes the four interconnected domains: ecology, economics, politics and culture. Sustainability science is the study of sustainable development and environmental science.
