TLSSatire and sex: The forces that shaped pantomime – TheTLS The pantomime is never as good as it used to be. We all know that. The history of pantomime has always been a story of pleasure in regret and nostalgia. Charles Dickens probably started it with his reverie on the death of Joseph Grimaldi – “Joey” and his song of the “Hot Codlins”: “We have lost that clown now; . . . we have lost that clown and that pantomime, but our relish for the entertainment still remains unimpaired”, wrote Dickens (as “Boz”) in his introduction to the Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi in 1837. “Each successive boxing-day finds us in the same state of high excitement and expectation, we still peruse with all eagerness and avidity the exclusive accounts of the coming wonders in the theatrical newspapers of the Sunday before, and still believe them as devoutly as we did before twenty years’ experience had shown us that they are always wrong.” The nostalgia for the pantomime is for childhood, for its simple appetites and visceral memories.
