The surveys were designed to discover what companies currently have in place to govern their growing data reservesand determine if these practices are effective at mitigating risk and compliance issues. In the U.K., 75 percent of organizations claim to have a policy in place to manage their data, and almost half (49 percent) rely on end users to self-categorize information. Findings from the U.S. show that 58 percent claim to have an IG policy in place, 64 percent say that their practices are only “somewhat effective” and over half (52 percent) rely on end users to manage their own data. As a consultant and educator, I’m often asked about information management certifications so I’ve been watching the development of the Information Governance Professional (IGP) certification by ARMA International (ARMA) with interest.
According to ARMA, a certified Information Governance Professional “creates and oversees programs to govern the information assets of the enterprise. The IGP partners with the business to facilitate innovation and competitive advantage, while ensuring strategic and operational alignment of business, legal, compliance, and technology goals and objectives. The IGP oversees a program that supports organizational profitability, productivity, efficiency and protection.” When ARMA advertised the pilot test group at a significantly reduced fee ($250 USD vs. the regular fee of $599 USD), I decided to apply. The certification is based on a timed online examination that can be taken at your leisure, in your environment.
The examination is a comprehensives set of multiple choice questions covering various aspects of the RSD solution that you have studied. The focus is on the product's function, technical concepts, installation, configuration, best practices and methodology as applied to project implementation. Registration for certification is available on Training Portal. When registering, you will need to provide your contact details for. Once registered, you will receive an email with confirmation of the product certification you have registered to undertake and a link to start the online certification exam. Having completed an exam, students will be provided an electronic copy of their examination paper, notification of their score and whether or not they have been successful in obtaining the certification.
