The extreme environmental conditions found here make the process of growing food a formidable challenge. Four months of solid daylight, four months of total darkness, and unpredictable winds and temperature changes present a unique growing situation. One cannot simply build a glasshouse, set up a system, and expect tasty produce to grow! However, at McMurdo Station on Ross Island (and to a much lesser degree at the South Pole Station), successful harvests are achieved on a daily basis. Where does Perlite fit into all of this? One of the most important parts of our greenhouse is its ability to receive needed supplies such as Perlite before the base closes for winter. Hi-SEAS and Mars Society kick off new season of missions

Hi-SEAS) – a human spaceflight analog for Mars located on the slopes of the Mauna Loa volcano in Hawaii – just kicked off its third research mission designed to simulate manned missions on Mars. Located at an elevation of 2500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level, the analog site is located in a dry, rocky environment that is very cold and subject to very little precipitation. While there, the crew of Mission Three will conduct detailed research studies to determine what is required to sustain a space flight crew during an extended mission to Mars and while living on Mars.

The six-member team includes Martha Lenio (Commander), Allen Mirkadyrov, Sophie Milam, Neil Sheibelhut, Jocelyn Dunn, and Zak Wilson, with Ed Fix and Micheal Castro in Reserve. Sponsored by the College of Applied Science and Technology at Weber State and the Air Force STEM Outreach Program at Hill Air Force Base, it’s based on the Challenger Center for Space Science Education’s acclaimed Marsville, the Cosmic Village program, and has been modified to include Air Force technologies and terminologies to provide a unique hands-on learning opportunity for students.

Students prepare for and simulate going on a manned mission to Mars to build a colony of habitats. The space exploration and colonization activities for this project combine math, science, engineering, communications, and the arts; demonstrate problem solving and teamwork using a cooperative model; and provide students with positive role models from the fields of science and technology.
