You Should Travel Anywhere and Everywhere After College Graduation I graduated from college less than three weeks ago, closing the book on yet another chapter of my life. Two days later I was on a plane to Bangkok with nothing but a suitcase and a vague sense of what the next nine months would offer. Yet I am comfortable with my decision to momentarily put my life on hold, to keep at bay the demands of a conventional lifestyle for just a while longer because my life, to date, has been nothing but conventional. Arguably, the same can be said for many of the nearly 3.5 million young Americans that graduated this spring because the plan was clear from an early age: go to school, get into college, graduate, secure a good job, work, start a family, work some more and then retire.

My husband generally refuses to go for any kind of spa treatment (he doesn’t like other people touching him), but our Aussie roommates in Vienna told us this was an amazing must do thing in Turkey so he agreed to give it a try. It wasn’t as amazing as we expected, but it was interesting… If you’ve never heard of a Turkish bath before, the first thing I should point out is that it isn’t the kind of bath where you soak in a tub of water. A Turkish bath is more like a sauna (not as hot) where you sit on a huge slab of warm marble with other people until you get scrubbed and massaged by a professional tellak (traditionally a male, but some baths now use females). She immediately fell for the sounds of the Spanish guitar, romantic culture, and bright-flavored food. She went off to college at University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign where she majored in Spanish & Sociology. From 2006-2007 she spent an unforgettable year studying abroad in Barcelona, where she acclimated herself to the culture, learned the language, and traveled around Europe.
