[세계일보]온라인을 기반으로 한 대학이 속속 등장하면서 공립대학을 위협하고 있다. 온라인 대학은 크게 기업식으로 이익을 추구하는 ‘영리대학’과 아이비리그 등 유명 사립대학 등이 참여하는 ‘대규모 온라인 오픈강좌’(MOOC)로 구분된다. 미국의 대표적인 영리대학인 피닉스대학은 온라인강좌 수강 학위제를 운영하고 있으며 전국에 등록 학생이 700만명에 달한다.MOOC는 2002년 처음 등장했고, 미국의 명문대학들이 최근 대거 가세하면서 대학교육 혁명을 예고하고 있다. 코우세라(Coursera)는 미국 주요 대학의 200개 강좌를 인터넷으로 중계하고 있다. 2012년 기준 미국 내 수강생은 230만명에 이른다.
