A Collection of Free Media Resources This post attempts to list my top favorite free sites for royalty-free images, music, and videos for creative projects. Since 2000 I have been teaching university students how to design for print, the web, and the screen. One of the very first things we go over is that it’s always best to use your OWN original photos, drawings, music, and videos that you created yourself. About The Library of Congress Yes. We really are THE Library of Congress. We invited your tags and comments and you responded. Wow, did you respond! Thank You. The identifying information is appreciated--many of our old photos came to us with very little description.

Earth from Space The NASA Earth Observations Photography database of images is a national treasure. We are publishing these selected photos and related captions on the Internet to provide a glimpse of this national treasure to the public. This database was compiled by our staff to illustrate some very interesting Earth features and processes, including cities as seen by our Astronauts from space. Earth from Space provides several ways to search the selected images. 99 Extreme Examples of Bokeh Photography The quality of the blur has come to be known as “bokeh”. Bokeh in terms of photography referring the area in the photo which are out of focus light to increase beautiful and dramatic image. The origin of the term is from the Japanese word “romaji” (english characters) is spelled “boke” (pronounced bo-keh) and which means “fuzzy”. For good Bokeh, ideally points and lines would blur smoothly as they fell out of focus, in the manner, for example, of a smooth Gaussian blurring.

15 of the Best Open Source Image Sites on the Web Recently, a teacher we know put together a concise and effective PowerPoint presentation which was well received. The only thing was that when the students inquired where the photos came from, the teacher said he searched for them using Google. The students replied, “You mean you stole them!” Some of the images still prominently displayed the watermark from iStock Photo. It looks like open source image sites weren’t a consideration here! Trust me, you don’t want to be in this position, especially if you are trying to teach the 21st Century Fluencies of Global Digital Citizenship. Science and Imagination: Full Steam(punk) Ahead with Primary Sources Collecting cards with pictures of events in ballooning history from 1795 to 1846 Lately we’ve been oohing and aahing over the new Library of Congress online exhibition Finding Our Place in the Cosmos and sharing new science-related teaching resources with you. Happily, thinking about other worlds isn’t just for science class! As seen in a recent blog post on 300 years of imaginary spaceships, not only scientists but writers and artists have been imagining fantastic possibilities for centuries. Today, many authors, artists, filmmakers, and fashion designers are exploring something called “steampunk.” Though definitions of steampunk may vary, the genre was inspired by the inventiveness of the Victorian era: think balloons, steam ships, locomotives, and diving bells.

Public domain image resources Public domain image resources is a copy of the master Wikipedia page at Meta, which lists a number of sources of public domain images on the Web. Public Domain Mark enables works that are no longer restricted by copyright to be marked as such in a standard and simple way, making them easily discoverable and available to others.

Alice's Blog Street Art Project Spreads 4,000 Blue Butterflies Throughout the World Artist Tasha Lewis has started a global street art project where she will create 4,000 magnetic butterflies and then send them in packs of 400 to 10 groups around the world. In total, the swarms of butterflies will travel to 100 different homes, hopefully landing in all seven continents. Born from the fact that, as an individual artist living in New York City, she would not… Continue Added by alice on April 15, 2014 at 10:00am — No Comments

A growing number of websites have amazing photos you can use for your work. Some of them cost money. Primary Sources in Science Classrooms: Dimensions of Water Quality This post was co-written by Trey Smith, the Library of Congress 2015-16 Science Teacher in Residence, and June Teisan, 2014-15 Albert Einstein Distinguished Educator Fellow. Throughout history, humans have devised methods for transporting, testing, and transforming water, a limited natural resource. Examining historical primary sources invites students to grapple with the local, global, social, political, and scientific dimensions of water. Begin a unit on water with this 1828 political cartoon from London.

The educational system in the United States: an overview First, the youngest students, when they’re children, can go to school starting at about 4 years old, and that would be preschool. In most places those are not public, they’re not free, so one would have to pay to send their child to preschool. And then there’s kindergarten, and in most places, that is public and that is free, so families can send their children there. And then, everywhere, at 6 years old, 1st grade starts, and that’s public, there’s a public option. You can also of course send your child to private school. So from 1st grade to 5th grade, that’s primary school, or elementary school is the other name for it. Copyright-Free Photo Archive: Public Domain Photos and Images The photo archive at Gimp-Savvy.com has more than 27,000 free photos and images saved on our own dedicated server, consisting of over 2.5 Gbytes of data. The goal is to make this archive a resource for collage and photo-montage using digital image editing techniques such as those described in Chapter 7 of Grokking the GIMP. To improve the archive's usefulness, full indexing of the images is planned. However, this job would be taxing for a single person, and would probably produce only mediocre results.
