New Urban Mechanics The Close Web: Social Networks Are Coming Home | Wired Business San Francisco’s Potrero Hill was one of the neighborhoods that tested the new version of Nextdoor. Photo: David Spencer/Flickr In its early days, the web helped bring together scientists in Switzerland and California. Later, it united photographers, fanfic authors, foodies, political activists, amateur filmmakers, college alumni, and other groups spread out within cities, countries, and indeed the entire world. Now the web is at last evolving to connect one of the trickiest groups of all: people who live right next door to one another. Today, neighborhood social network Nextdoor takes the wraps off an extensive overhaul that greatly expands the number of locals with whom its members may connect. “I’m connected to a bunch of neighbors who I’ve literally never met. Obviously that’s important for Nextdoor’s continued success (the social service doubled to 8,000 neighborhoods in the last six months and just closed a $22 million venture capital round).

These Simple Interactive News Maps Give Your Stories A Sense Of Place ⚙ Co Interactive maps can draw people into complicated stories in an easy-to-understand way, making them great traffic-earners for media sites. But building those maps often involves working with arcane geographical software and writing lots of JavaScript, making Internet cartography too difficult and time-consuming for many journalists and online storytellers. The founders of Vizzuality, the company behind the cloud-based mapping tool CartoDB, intend to democratize interactive maps so that overhead is a thing of the past. “Anybody who knows how to use Excel should be able to build a map,” said Vizzuality CEO and cofounder Javier de la Torre. CartoDB makes it possible to create interactive maps just by uploading a spreadsheet with a column of addresses or other location information. Then, step-by-step wizards and built-in templates let users quickly customize what gets displayed, color-coding points or shapes based on other columns in the data and designing tooltips and pop-up windows.

Frankfurt Gestalten | Bürger machen Stadt. Why You're Not Friends With Your Neighbors | Wired Business Nextdoor and Topix, two online community networks, hope virtual fences will translate to real businesses. Photo: Jim at sonicchicken After building neighborhood social networks in more than 3,000 communities across the U.S., Nirav Tolia has learned just how many different things neighbors can accomplish. Using Nextdoor, the site built by Tolia and his team, neighbors get burglars arrested, investigate possible water poisoning, and stop the installation of parking meters. They lend one another ladders and grills, recommend babysitters, and upload videos of locals. But the one thing they’re not looking to do is make friends. “You’re not friends with your neighbors,” Tolia says. “With your neighbors, everyone can get fired up about the pothole, and that’s something that your Twitter followers and your friends and your business colleagues just don’t care about… On Facebook, I’m going to be posting about my birthday.” Tolia might be on to something.

Here comes the Neighborland: Creating communities by crowdsourcing | | Kurat Image by Neighborland is a new ideation crowdsourcing startup that gives citizens a “fun and easy way for residents to suggest new businesses and services that they want in their neighborhood.” Founded by Candy Chang, Tee Parham and Dan Parham, and funded by the Tulane Social Entrepreneurship program with support from the Rockefeller Foundation, it launched in alpha mode this June in New Orleans. Co-founder Dan Parham shares his thoughts on the new venture. What’s the story behind starting Neighborland? Neighborland started as an off-line art project called ‘I Wish This Was‘ from one of our founders, Candy Chang. In January, we applied for some grants, and Candy received an Urban Innovation Challenge Fellowship from Tulane University in February for Neighborland. We’ve been working on the platform this spring with our co-founder and Chief Engineer, Tee Parham. How is it different from other crowdsourcing tools? We are 100% focused on making things happen.
