There is a cost implication that must be taken into account and only an educator will know if it is right for their students. What Teachers Need to Know about Authentic Learning Authentic learning is learning in the "real world". It focuses on authentic deeds and students get to solve complex problems and find their solutions using a variety of activities like: role-playing, case studies, and collaborative peer learning. Authentic learning is idiosyncratic in its nature in that the setting where it takes place is multidisciplinary. In other words, the learning environment can be accommodated to foster different learning events. Now with the widespread of web technologies, more and more environments for authentic learning have been created. Think of the virtual learning communities or what James Paul Gee called affinity spaces.

Photograph: Frank Baron for the Guardian Our year 6 students have been using iPads and iPods since September on a one-to-one basis to support learning, develop productivity, independence and impact on pupil progress across the curriculum. The devices haven't been used for everything; but they are available as a tool to help with their learning for a variety of tasks. Alongside this there have also been daily occasions when the best tool for the job has been pencil and paper, scissors and glue, laptop and printer, a good book and silence. It's always been made clear to pupils, parents and staff that we would use technology if it was the best tool for the job to enhance learning.
