Project Noah
These lovely little birds are certainly frugivorous! I saw them for the first time ever right outside on March 24, 2014. They were in the fruit trees right outside of the school! However, I only had my phone camera so the photos weren’t the greatest. So every day this week I’ve had mom bring the camera in case they were back, and sure enough they were! There were so many cars in the pickup circle, by the time we got close enough for me to get out and get some photos, they had already flown away!

Home | Citing this Reference | About Us | Frequently Asked Questions | Contact Us | Privacy Steps to Becoming and Educator-Curator When I recently presented a workshop on Digital Tools for Content Curation I spent very little time discussing how to go about actually becoming a curator. Being a hands-on, roll your sleeves up and get stuck in kinda session we went straight for the toys. However, I would highly recommend this excellent presentation on Educators as Curators from Corinne Weisgerber and Shannan Butler, St Edwards University in the US. It is worth taking a look at in terms of clarifying the purpose for curation and things to think about before you get into curation boots and all. These professors of communication clearly describe the “journey of a resource: from birth to bookmark”, the process from finding and selecting material through to sharing and tracking it. Most importantly from my perspective they share about how to editorialise the content.

Top Tips For Reducing Inflammation In The Body Most health experts now agree that inflammation is the root cause behind most all chronic illnesses and disease. While there are a variety of causes for chronic inflammation in the body, the outcome is always the same. Over time and left unchecked it leads to premature aging and diminished health. STAR: Biochem - Home StarBiochem is a 3-D protein viewer that allows students to learn key concepts about the biology of proteins in an interactive manner. Unlike traditional 3-D protein viewers which may require installation and significant technical expertise, StarBiochem is an intuitive 3-D protein viewer designed with students in mind. StarBiochem’s user interface was designed to visually represent protein structural information based on the four different levels of protein structure, which mirrors how students get introduced to this topic in class and in textbooks.

Biology Archives - Science Sparks Playing Detective – add some science to role play This post is all about adding a bit of science sparkle to role play, the activities should hopefully add a simulating and educational twist to an already fun game. My little boy is usually a bit reluctant to play role play games, but generally if I add in a task or some props he is much more enthusiastic. Here are just a few of our favourite ideas. Make a disguise/camouflage Where are you playing? Can you disguise yourself with some...

Library Of Congress Unveils Massive Common Core Resource Center The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) is here and teachers are trying to figure out how to best integrate it into their tried-and-true lessons. They’re struggling to integrate technology to best augment CCSS. They are in desperate need of classroom materials that they can trust. Like a superhero, the U.S. Library of Congress has just swooped in and unveiled an enormous new (and free!) wellnessmama I’ve been meaning to write this post for a long time and finally had the time while the kids are napping and I am (ironically) sipping a Chia Seed Energy Drink (recipe below). If you don’t already use chia seeds, you are missing out! Not only are they gluten/grain free naturally, but one tablespoon of Chia Seeds has more calcium than a glass of milk, more Omega-3s than Salmon, and more antioxidants than blueberries. Perfect? Almost… they do get stuck in your teeth if you chew them plain (ask me how I know that!).

High School Student & Teacher Outreach The Department of Biology is actively involved in science outreach at the high school level. The goal of these outreach programs is to make science fun and exciting by bringing new hands-on activities into the classrooms, and to make teaching and learning science a more enriching and rewarding experience for both students and teachers. Science teachers from the greater Boston area are invited to: Attend a 5-day summer workshop with lectures on current topics in biology and hands-on laboratory activities.

C-ROADS C-ROADS is an award-winning computer simulation that helps people understand the long-term climate impacts of policy scenarios to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It allows for the rapid summation of national greenhouse gas reduction pledges in order to show the long-term impact on our climate. Features MIT’s John Sterman of the Climate Interactive team explains C-ROADS science and confidence building at a US State Department side event in Copenhagen. Role of C-ROADS How to See If Your Photos Are Being Used On Another Site I’ve got a super quick and easy tutorial for you today. This is a cool trick I’ve been using a lot lately, and I thought I’d pass on this neat tool to you just in case you’ve ever wondered how to do this. Did you know there’s a really simple way to see if photos have been taken from your blog and uploaded to another site? This trick will allow you to do a “Reverse Image Search” for any photo from your blog, or any photo you’ve uploaded on the internet, to see a list of all the other sites where this photo appears.

7 Top Health Benefits of Maca Maca, a root that belongs to the radish family, is most commonly available in powder form. Grown in the mountains of Peru, it has been called “Peruvian ginseng.” Maca’s benefits have been long valued, and has recently been popularized as a supplement and food ingredient. There are no serious known side effects of maca, but like any other supplement it should not be taken in large amounts. When you first start using maca, it’s best to begin by taking smaller amounts and building up; even 1/2 teaspoon is a good place to start.

Biology Teaching Resources Welcome to the Teachers' Center at Explore Biology. Here you will find resources to help you teach biology at the high school level. Some of my Regents lectures are supported by Powerpoint presentations. If you are not familiar, Regents is a 10th grade very simplified introduction to Biology, that is limited by a state-wide exam. These PPTs are not appropriate for AP Biology courses! I have just started to upload these, so please check back if you need. Top Tips for Tweeps – A step by step introduction to Twitter You’ve read the ResourceLink blog’s previous posts on developing a Professional Learning Network using Social Media. You’ve seen the term PLN bandied around at conferences and online, and you’ve heard TV shows and radio stations asking you to add your comments via Twitter. You keep meaning to set up a Twitter account and see what the fuss is about, but it just seems far too overwhelming… Here is your answer! A step by step, no-fuss explanation of Twitter, how to set up an account and how to use it professionally to access the wealth of resources, information and connections that are literally just one click away once you build your network. If you’d like to learn more about the bigger picture of Professional Learning Networks, please feel free to view this presentation,
