TeacherExpt:Experiments with hydrogels – hair gel and disposable nappies - Learn Chemistry Wiki From Learn Chemistry Wiki A superabsorbent polymer In this pair of activities students investigate 'hydrogels – polymeric smart materials. Lesson organisation To do all the practical work takes about 30 mins. If time is available, it is worth considering combining this experiment with another experiment with hydrogels, using plant water crystals. It is a good idea to ask students to make detailed observations of each part of the experiment. Apparatus and chemicals Eye protection Hair gel Each working group requires: Hair gel (see note 1) SaltPetri dish or lid Teaspoon or similar – an ordinary spatula is a bit small Disposable nappies (diapers) Each working group requires: A disposable nappy (see note 2) Scissors A large ice cream tub or similar container (see note 3) Dessert spoon or similar measure Stirring rod Large beaker or plastic tub to hold at least 600 cm3Plastic gloves for those with sensitive skin Access to: Distilled water, about 500 cm3 per group (see note 4) Salt Technical notes

STEMClubs : Activities Greenpower F24 Car 01st February 2012 We started building our car in January 2008. We entered our first race a Bedford Autodrome in September. A thrilling race left us placed 18th and very tired, but extremely satisfied. Are we going to do it all again? This time with more cars, more students, better materials and loads more fun!! The year 11 students are already making plans for F24+ when they reach sixth form. This project requires a high level of commitment from both staff and students. The learning oportunities are endless. They are also enthused about the research, design and manufacturing process. They have also bonded in a way that was unexpected.
