These standards pose a special challenge to mathematics: to develop a core curriculum suitable for all students that is grounded in authentic, concrete tasks in which important mathematics is embedded in meaningful and realistic problems from life and work. Historically, education in the United States, like Caesar's Gaul, has been divided into three tracks–academic, vocational, and general–that differ greatly in goals, status, size, and outcomes. Although two out of three U.S. secondary school students say that they intend to go to college, and sixty percent do begin full time postsecondary study, only one-third actually complete a college-preparatory program while in high school [National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), 1992].
