By the by, I consistently use that title because I mean for it to operate as a trigger warning. I write a lot about rape, but sometimes I write about other things, and I don’t want anybody taken off-guard transitioning from “help computer” into wtf rape-talk. Case you were wondering.
The Creepiness Question | shattersnipe: malcontent & rainbows
Trigger warning: predatory behaviour, creepiness, sexual assault. Yesterday, I read this account of creepy stalking behaviour retold by a woman whose husband had witnessed it first-hand and subsequently described the incident to her in detail. During the course of her husband’s recitation, the woman asked him what she refers to as The Question, capitalised because, once asked, he stopped seeing the creeper as simply being awkward and inappropriate and started seeing him as frightening and potentially dangerous. And as I was reading, something clicked in my head regarding an incident which, approximately sixteen years ago, left me deeply unsettled, and which continues to unsettle me in memory.

It seems an enlightening enterprise to look at the visual representations of rape and sexual violence made by women and compare them with those made by men. The trouble arises in trying to find historically significant artists of both genders sharing the same temporal and cultural backgrounds to help us establish a credible basis for dialogue between them. But from the start, the sad yet all-too-obvious fact makes itself known: If there is any significant artistic dialogue on rape between the sexes, it remains obscure to art history.

L e Nouvel Observateur a publié le 19 novembre un manifeste contre le viol signé par 313 femmes , dont des personnalités comme Clémentine Autain ou Marie-Laure de Villepin, l'ex-épouse de l'ancien Premier ministre, mais aussi des femmes moins connues, déclarant avoir été violées –il compte désormais à plus de 700 signatures. Le magazine affichait entre autres sur sa une la phrase-choc «Une victime toutes les 8 minutes en France» . En introduction de son web-docu sur le viol, lancé la même semaine, France Télévisions explique que «plus de 75.000 femmes sont violées chaque année en France» , un chiffre qui correspond en fait à un viol toutes les 7 minutes et était déjà avancé par la campagne «Viol, la honte doit changer de camp» de 2011, lancée par plusieurs associations .

This week, a DC-based feminist group projected the phrase “rape is rape” onto the US Capitol building. The action was meant to highlight survivors’ stories and bring attention to the way rape is often mischaracterized. The sentiment may seem an obvious one—who doesn’t understand what rape is?—but the message, sadly, is much needed.

For someone who's so pro-war, commentator Liz Trotta sure has trouble figuring out who the enemy is. On Fox News over the weekend, she belittled proponents of women in combat and derided "feminists" who complain that uniformed ladies "are now being raped too much" by male soldiers. As evidence, she cited a recent DOD report that assaults on women had risen 64 percent in the past six years. "Now, what did they expect? Pour une femme blanche qui porte plainte, 5 ne le font pas. Pour les femmes noires, on monte à 15.
