Hacking the Used Car Purchase « carsabi Paleo diets, polyphasic sleep, jail-broken kindles – if you recognize these you’re probably a hacker, and we’d like to share some tricks to do with automotive purchasing that we’ve gleaned from looking at about 20,000 dealership and classified car listings daily. Even assuming you don’t habitually optimize (hack) what other people take for granted, car hunting is important enough to be worth serious attention. We’ve used our search database to come up with five hacks that should save you both money and sanity on your next purchase. Shopping on Craigslist will save you at least $2,000 on most vehicles; the ubiquitous Toyota Corolla has median savings of $2,854 (916 datapoints, all clean title) with other models summarized below. In perhaps an obvious corollary, dealerships make money by purchasing your car at a lower price than they can sell it for. Do yourself and the community a service and let your old car go at a reasonable price. Happy hunting!

KondensKompressor.

Engine control unit An engine control unit (ECU), now called the powertrain control module (PCM), is a type of electronic control unit that controls a series of actuators on an internal combustion engine to ensure optimal engine performance. It does this by reading values from a multitude of sensors within the engine bay, interpreting the data using multidimensional performance maps (called lookup tables), and adjusting the engine actuators accordingly. Before ECUs, air/fuel mixture, ignition timing, and idle speed were mechanically set and dynamically controlled by mechanical and pneumatic means. One of the earliest attempts to use such a unitized and automated device to manage multiple engine control functions simultaneously was the "Kommandogerät" created by BMW in 1939, for their 801 14-cylinder aviation radial engine.[citation needed] This device replaced the 6 controls used to initiate hard acceleration with one control in the 801 series-equipped aircraft. Power from the people 17 October 2011Last updated at 03:41 By David Cohen Technology Reporter The biofuel cell, uses glucose and oxygen at concentrations found in the body to generate electricity. Plugging gadgets into a socket in the wall, or loading them with batteries - or maybe even unfurling a solar panel - is how most of us think of getting electricity. But what about plugging them into your body? It may sound far fetched, but under the shadow of the Alps, Dr Serge Cosnier and his team at the Joseph Fourier University of Grenoble have built a device to do just that. They are the first group in the world to demonstrate their device working while implanted in a living animal. Biofuel cells could kick-start a revolution in artificial organs and prosthetics that would transform tens of thousands of lives every year. Batteries are good enough for implants that don't need much power, but they run out fast, and when it comes to implants, that is more than just an inconvenience, it is a fundamental limitation.

OBDII HOWTO Your car's mind is small and designed for readability, so don't be surprised how easy it is to see what it's thinking. Introduction If your vehicle was manufactured after 1996, it contains an On Board Diagnostic (OBD) computer that captures information about how it's running. OBD II is version 2.0 of the standard for communicating this information. The data tracked by the OBD II system was originally intended to monitor the engine's emissions and track down problems that caused cars to pollute more than normal. Since the data's transmission format and content are standardized, a number of third parties have developed hardware to detect and display these codes. Purpose The OBD II port allows your car to report three kinds of information: Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs), real-time data, and freeze frame data. DTCs are simply error codes that can be looked up to determine what problem your car is experiencing. Real-time data is the raw sensor data reported to the OBD computer. The Standard Data

MIT stacks solar panels like pancakes, increases their power output by up to 20x What’s better than one pancake? A whole stack of pancakes! Using the same logic, a team of MIT researchers have stacked a bunch of photovoltaic solar cells together to produce up to 20 times the power output of conventional solar power installations. Normally I’m the first to drop my jaw in awe at MIT’s latest and greatest innovations, but this one really is a bit of a no-brainer. Basically, photovoltaic cells themselves aren’t all that expensive — according to MIT, they’re only around 35% of the total cost of a solar power installation. To combat this issue, MIT has built 3D stacks of photovoltaic cells. Squeezing more power out of low-light periods is a huge, huge deal.

Protege5 I thought it would be easier than it actually was. This is not a HOWTO guide. It is a HOWI guide. In other words, it's not how to install your AC adaptor. Before you undertake a project like this, make sure you know what you're doing. Consult a professional if you need to. I scored a couple of DC to AC converters on the Web. Click to embiggen The panel in the back of the console pops right out with a screwdriver. Other panels of the console are removable as well. I sheathed the power cable in a red split loom, just because I had it left over from a previous project, and I thought that might protect it from any shifting or rubbing caused by the handbrake or moving the cable around. Next, I snaked the cable through the console and brought it up to the front where it could plug into the cigarette lighter. Therefore, it was splicing time! I also figured out that I was going to have to drill some sort of hole in the bottom of the cup holder for the wire to come through.
