UI-First Software Development We're currently in the midst of building the new web property I alluded to in a previous post. Before I write a single line of code, I want to have a pretty clear idea of what the user interface will look like first. I'm in complete agreement with Rick Schaut here: When you're working on end-user software, and it doesn't matter if you're working on a web app, adding a feature to an existing application, or working on a plug-in for some other application, you need to design the UI first. This is hard for a couple of reasons. The first is that most programmers, particularly those who've been trained through University-level computer science courses, learned how to program by first writing code that was intended to be run via the command line. Of course, UI is hard, far harder than coding for developers. Remember, to the end user, the interface is the application. It's certainly true that there are limitations on how the UI can be built based on the technology you're using.

4 Design Patterns You Should Know for Web Development: Observer, Singleton, Strategy, and Decorator Have you ever been on a team where you need to start a project from scratch? That's usually the case in many start-ups and other small companies. There are so many different programming languages, architectures, and other concerns that it can be difficult to figure out where to start. That's where design patterns come in. A design pattern is like a template for your project. And you and your team get to decide which set of best practices is the most useful for your project. Programming design patterns can be used across all programming languages and can be used to fit any project because they only give you a general outline of a solution. There are 23 official patterns from the book Design Patterns - Elements of Reusable Object-Oriented Software, which is considered one of the most influential books on object-oriented theory and software development. The Singleton Design Pattern That prevents multiple instances from being active at the same time which could cause weird bugs. Final Thoughts

A Multitouch Mini, MTmini for short, is a cheap, small, portable multitouch pad. The MTmini uses the "Front Diffused Illumination" multitouch technique, with normal ambient light (infrared not required or needed) and a normal off-the-shelf webcam (IR filter can still be in place). -Parts List- Box (ie. -How's it Work and What Conditions are Necessary? The Disciplines of User Experience UPDATE: I updated this diagram in 2009 for the second edition of Designing for Interaction that addresses some of the shortcomings I note below. The diagram now looks like this (click for larger image): Like almost nothing I’ve done, a model that I put in my first book Designing for Interaction showing the overlapping disciplines of user experience/experience design has been referenced repeatedly in various places. The problem is I was never very happy with the diagram. For one thing, it’s missing architecture in there, which is becoming increasing important. So I redrew it: Click for a larger image or download the pdf. It’s still not perfect: it’s missing Sound Design and Ergonomics/Human Factors, and the way the circles had to overlap downplays Visual Design. This diagram also begs the question: what is user experience design by itself, those areas that aren’t filled up with other bubbles?

A design pattern is a well-described solution to a common software problem. I have written extensively on java design patterns. You can download PDF eBook (130+ pages) by subscribing to our newsletter. Java Design Patterns Some of the benefits of using design patterns are: Design Patterns are already defined and provides industry standard approach to solve a recurring problem, so it saves time if we sensibly use the design pattern. Java Design Patterns are divided into three categories - creational, structural, and behavioral design patterns. Design Patterns Video Tutorials Recently I started video tutorials on Design Patterns and they are uploaded on YouTube. Creational Design Patterns Creational design patterns provide solution to instantiate a object in the best possible way for specific situations. 1. 2. 3. Abstract Factory pattern is similar to Factory pattern and it’s a factory of factories. 4. 5. Structural Design Patterns 1.

MAKE: Blog: Surface scratch control input The Scratch Input project explores an interesting very economical method for human-computer interface using a contact mic/stethoscope and a wall. table, or similar – We present Scratch Input, an acoustic-based input technique that relies on the unique sound produced when a fingernail is dragged over the surface of a textured material, such as wood, fabric, or wall paint. We employ a simple sensor that can be easily coupled with existing surfaces, such as walls and tables, turning them into large, unpowered and ad hoc finger input surfaces. Our sensor is sufficiently small that it could be incorporated into a mobile device, allowing any suitable surface on which it rests to be appropriated as a gestural input surface. Several example applications were developed to demonstrate possible interactions. – Scratch Input Collin Cunningham collin@makezine.com Related
