With these techniques, you can bring out the best in an image, or absolutely destroy the graphic, but still keep the original photo intact. So to begin, find a photo that you’d like to make dirty. Something that might feel bland as is, and could use more of a grungy feel. Here is what I’ll be using: Crank the Colors Now, we want to increase the contrast and the intensify colors of the photo, but do it in a non-destructive way (by non-destructive, I simply mean we do not want to lose the data from the original image as we modify the appearance of our graphic). First, Duplicate the Layer. As you can see, we’ve increased the image’s sharpness as well as its saturation. High Pass for Sharpness The High Pass filter gives a photo that refined, sharp look that is hard to obtain using only a camera. Make a new duplicate of the original layer. Creating a Stunning Old-World Look in Photoshop In this tutorial, we are going to create a sort of old-worldy composition featuring a compass and making use of some awesome vector artwork from Arsenal. As always there is a PSD file at the bottom of the tutorial. In this instance, I would highly recommend downloading it as this is quite a complex composition. Be warned this is a LONG tutorial! Oh and in case you're wondering, inspiration comes from a really neat set of books, one of which is called the Golden Compass (actually they are making the book series a movie now!). Assets To do this, we're going to need a few assets to work with. Additionally I needed a compass image which I got from iStockPhoto for $1. Part 1 - the Banner I've split this tutorial up into two sections, then at the end we bring them together to form the final image. Step 1: So first of all, we start with a background gradient. Foreground color - #35444b Background color - #1a2023 Step 2: Now the next thing to do is paste in the first of our vector images. Step 3:

Workflow Technique #051 One of the skills that separates novice photographers from the more experienced is an awareness and control over “Depth of Field” (commonly referred to by its abbreviation “DOF”). Sometimes, to get the shot, we need to use a very small aperture. When we do, not only is the subject in sharp focus, but features in the background and/or foreground can compete for attention. This tutorial will walk you through the steps in using a new feature in Adobe Photoshop CS: the Lens Blur filter. If you take an image where the subject is at a distance, everything in the image at that same distance will be equally sharp. Features in front or behind the subject will have less sharpness. Figure 1. There are three basic facts to DOF. • DOF increases as a lens is stopped down (i.e., the f/number is increased); • DOF increases as focal length decreases; • DOF increases with subject distance. I had to choose. f/32? When I am out in the field, I do not calculate DOF with such precision. Figure 2. Figure 3.
