theconversation In the past week you’ve probably eaten crops that wouldn’t exist in nature, or that have evolved extra genes to reach freakish sizes. You’ve probably eaten “cloned” food and you may have even eaten plants whose ancestors were once deliberately blasted with radiation. And you could have bought all this without leaving the “organic” section of your local supermarket. Anti-GM dogma is obscuring the real debate over what level of genetic manipulation society deems acceptable. Genetically-modified food is often regarded as something you’re either for or against, with no real middle ground. Yet it is misleading to consider GM technology a binary decision, and blanket bans like those in many European countries are only likely to further stifle debate. Between organic foods and tobacco engineered to glow in the dark lie a broad spectrum of “modifications” worthy of consideration. 1. Think of carrots, corn or watermelons – all foods you might eat without much consideration. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Image copyright Getty Images The seventh season of fantasy TV drama Game of Thrones has hurtled to a close, and the burning question for fans right now is: "Who will inherit the Iron Throne?" The world of Westeros may be fictional, but its origins are far from imaginary. What better way to determine the true ruler of the Seven Kingdoms than by using the rules that govern the British monarchy? Image copyright HBO We've compiled a list of contenders for the coveted Iron Throne (the seat of the kingdom's monarchy) and enlisted royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams and medieval academics Prof Sarah Peverley and Dr Gordon McKelvie to weigh in on each candidate's chances. WARNING: This may contain spoilers Image copyright HBO / Hulton Archive Candidate 1: Cersei Lannister Born and bred in Westeros, Cersei is a devoted mother who married into royalty. Her children came from an incestuous relationship with her brother Jamie (both their sons became young kings). Candidate 2: Daenerys Targaryen
