Don't Overthink It Grids The vast majority of websites out there use a grid. They may not explicitly have a grid system in place, but if they have a "main content area" floated to the left a "sidebar" floated to the right, it's a simple grid. If a more complex layout presents itself, people often reach for a grid framework. Visual Grammar: How To Communicate Without Words I often use the phrase “visual design” when describing what we do as web designers. Recently I came across what I think is better phrase, “communication design.” When we design and build websites our goal is usually to communicate something to an audience.

Prefix free: Break free from CSS vendor prefix hell! -prefix-free lets you use only unprefixed CSS properties everywhere. It works behind the scenes, adding the current browser’s prefix to any CSS code, only when it’s needed. The target browser support is IE9+, Opera 10+, Firefox 3.5+, Safari 4+ and Chrome on desktop and Mobile Safari, Android browser, Chrome and Opera Mobile on mobile. If it doesn’t work in any of those, it’s a bug so please report it. Just before you do, please make sure that it’s not because the browser doesn’t support a CSS3 feature at all, even with a prefix. In older browsers like IE8, nothing will break, just properties won’t get prefixed.
Magazine columns and their layout options Columns are essential tools to standardize your layout. They will help you in getting order and structure of your magazine, but do resist to imprison your thinking into standard format because rigidity dulls the creativity. To avoid that trap you can play with column width and shapes. You should treat each story as a separate unit and mix the number of columns in each story. One story can be laid out on a two column grid while the other can be laid out in three, four or more column grid. Responsive Grid Frustrations - Susy, Zen and sub-pixel rounding - benfrain.com - blog of technology writer and web designer Ben Frain. The issues I’m about to describe aren’t particular to grid systems, these ‘sub-pixel’ rounding errors can affect any layout you want to work cross browser. I’m also not picking on IE here, this issue is exhibited when comparing the latest builds of Firefox, Safari and Chrome… Be aware that now, as of V1.06/March 2013, Susy also provides a mixin (@isolate-grid) to create container relative elements (if you don’t understand that already, read the post in full and you will). Therefore check out the Susy docs.

Best Tools For Cross-Browser Compatibility Check Cross browser testing is an integral and important part of the website design and development process. It’s not an easy task though. There are so many operating systems and browsers available online that testing one’s own website for its compatibility with all of them becomes more than hectic. But, you can’t skip this process also because it helps you know if your website is fully functional in all the environments or not. Some people, excluding thorough professionals, do not give much importance to this testing process.
