Managing an Established Digital Humanities Project: Principles and Practices from the Twentieth Year of the William Blake Archive. Abstract Scholars and practitioners of the digital humanities generally recognize the importance of solid project management and oversight.
But coursework and publications related to DH project management tend to focus heavily on the difficulties of planning and launching a new project rather than the challenges of maintaining an established one. Meanwhile, online advice for would-be managers is couched in the language of "tips and tricks" or "steps for beginners". Together these phenomena downplay the professional skills needed to successfully manage a project while suggesting that project management is necessary only in the beginning stages of an endeavor. They may even give the impression that scholarship in the digital humanities is inherently ephemeral.
When project management principles are made explicit among digital humanists, they are often presented with little project-specific grounding and usually from a beginner’s perspective. Figure 1. ASEH 2012: Madison Wisconsin and Digital History. Early on Thursday morning environmental historians from across the United States, Canada, and Europe converged on Madison, Wisconsin for the annual ASEH meeting.
Madison is not an easy, or cheap, place to get to and it seemed like everyone had a story about the round-about route they took to get to the conference. A quintet from Toronto spent 13 hours in a rented van; those from Vancouver routed through Minneapolis and Dallas; others flew into Chicago and bused it into Madison. It was worth the effort, Madison is one cool city with friendly people, heritage architecture, ongoing protests (Recall Walker), good food, and great beer. It is also full of Badgers. We believe that joint representation of the DH community in Europe is an important strategic measure to develop our field and support individual researchers and teaching & research initiatives in the Digital Humanities. One way of achieving this goal is to network regional European DH associations. To this end, regional initiatives and associations have the option of becoming an Associate Organization of EADH (on application). Regional organizations who obtain this status remain autonomous; however, for a small basic fee their members will enjoy all benefits provided for by EADH and ADHO. Two regional organizations have already become Associate Organizations of EADH in this way: the Italian AIUCD and the German language based DHd.
