Very nice, indeed, and it’s certainly a trend to keep. This chair by Javier Mariscal is made from recycled polypropylene with a stacking metal base or a non-stacking wooden base. While I’ve only found one UK retailer so far, I’m sure there’ll be some retailers stateside that will pick it up (fingers crossed). ICD/ITKE University of Stuttgart /via The concept of biomimicry is simple: it’s design innovation that’s inspired by nature, which can show up anywhere from buildings to products.
And what you get may be a surprising departure from the usual, like this beautiful wooden pavilion that takes structural cues from the sea urchin, while also transforming a public space. Created as a joint effort in biological research between University of Stuttgart’s Institute for Computational Design (ICD) and the Institute of Building Structures and Structural Design (ITKE), the so-called “bionic” dome is constructed out of plywood sheets at 6.5 millimeters thick.
Modelled on the biological principles of a sea urchin’s plate skeleton, the idea was to study and then emulate this biological form using advanced computer-based design and simulations. A crank handle drive means hands are free for steering while accelerating and three 180mm disc brakes and a 250mm suspension give added control on those extreme downhills. The Whatatree is modular shower system consisting of 5 360-degree turning segments that can be combined to the user’s preference or to fit any space. An intuitive color system controls water running down from the top of the tree, following the lines of the naturally formed stem down to the ends of the branches, creating an entirely new shower experience.

MOSAICO+ Cuptea Teabag Packaging Design by Lee Seo-jin. A Blooming Cuppa Tea Cuptea is a delightful integration of a disposable cup and teabag packaging.
Basically the cover of the teabag blooms into a beautiful disposable cup for tea. No doubt the packaging is a bit elaborate for a simple cup of chai, but I see this more from the ‘love of design’ point of view. I recently witnessed a marketing strategy for an eminent coffee brand, where they went door to door with a hot cuppa brew for select few winners.

Inspired by Dyson’s Air Multipliers, the Dyke bike (I’m serious) works on the same principles. Air flows through the bronze hollow cylinder creating an entrainment. Cart For As You Grow In this day and age of modularity fittings, it only makes sense to invest in products that can go beyond their obvious function. For example, the Monocart looks to be a simple child buggy, but as the child grows and out-grows the simple pleasures of being pushed around in a chair, making it a multi functional extends the useful life of this cart. Stockholm Design Week: architect Vesa Honkonen launched the Kiasma chair for Swedish manufacturer Källemo at the Stockholm Furniture Fair last week.
The assymetrical chairs were designed for for the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki, Finland. They will be installed in the museum café, and will replace those designed by Steven Holl ten years ago. Honkonen assisted Holl with the design for the original chairs. Honkonen has provided us with the original sketches, drawings and photos of development prototypes for the Kiasma chair.
