Is Microlearning The Solution You Need? Microlearning (a.k.a. micro learning or micro-learning) is an emergent learning strategy known for quickly closing skill and knowledge gaps. It seems to be an ideal instructional approach for many situations because: Information changes quicklyPeople find it difficult to keep up with thingsResources are freely available onlineNewer technologies support it Learn What You Want, Teach What You Love The idea for MentorMob sprouts from the backgrounds of Kris Chinosorn and Vince Leung. Both avid learners, they found early on that the Internet was not quite the incredible tool for learning new skills and hobbies that everyone thinks it is. Even with millions of free lessons online, the content is almost impossible to navigate. "You don’t really know where to start, what to learn next or who you can trust, which is why in a sea of free content, people are still paying for online lessons." - Vince Leung, CTO

17 Alternatives to Klout As we wrote about earlier this week, Klout has reworked its algorithms, and your scores have changed. Some have gone up, some down. Despite claiming more transparency with their algorithms, they are still mostly opaque and mysterious. As one of our readers commented, "Klout just pulled a Netflix, taking trust off the table." The Future of Social Media Monitoring - ReadWriteWeb Ten years ago the ClueTrain manifesto said that "markets are conversations" but today a more pertinent statement could be that conversations are becoming markets - or that there's a market for monitoring conversations. A whole class of technologies are emerging to help companies keep track of the conversations exploding online. The web moves fast enough that we may as well start looking at what comes next. Easy to use and affordable tools like Radian6 and ScoutLabs that track blog and twitter mentions are a given - but what kinds of crazy innovations can we hope for in the future?

10 More Resources For Getting the Most Out of Cell Phones and Smart Phones in School In Sunday’s article “Embracing the Cell Phone in the Classroom With Text Messaging Assignments”, we read about one instructor’s perspective on the importance of embracing the cell phone as a communications tool to engage and connect with today’s students. Wanting to learn a little more about the cell/smart phone phenomenon as it relates to education, I hit the ‘net again and examined dozens of websites and articles to find more worthwhile resources to share. Here’s 10 good ones I found (if you know of some other related resources worth sharing, please comment and tell us about them – thanks!). “10 Schools Encouraging Smartphones in the Classroom”, this December 2011 article offers 10 examples of schools that are doing this and discusses their approaches. I hope these resources provide some good ideas, insights, and tips for constructive instructional uses for those mobile communications devices that many of your students often can’t seem to ignore for more than a few minutes.

The Defining Characteristic Of Early 21st Century Learning The Only Thing You Need To Be A 21st Century Teacher by Terry Heick Contrary to what you’ve probably read, you don’t have to be engaging to be a great teacher—at least not in any charismatic and charming sense of the word. You can be relatively “boring” and lead students to outstanding academic progress, mainly by staying organized, being reflective, flexible, and in constant contact with an active and ambitious professional learning networking. Teaching differently requires work. Microlearning Microlearning deals with relatively small learning units and short-term learning activities. The term is used in e-learning and related fields in the sense of learning processes in mediated environments. Microlearning is a holistic approach for skill based learning and education which deals with relatively small learning units.

Digital Habitats: stewarding technology for communities » Putting our diagrams to work Jul 05 2010 Our goal in writing Digital Habitats was to recognize and move forward the literacies that are involved in stewarding technology for communities. We are happy when people put our ideas to work and appreciate it when people use our diagrams for that purpose. If you write us requesting permission to use the diagrams in a copyrighted work, we are happy to give permission. You may use them in informal ways, where you do not assert copyright, like a blog post without express permission, as long as you use them “as is”. Here are the diagrams that have been requested most frequently.

Social Media Policies Database Here is my collection social media policies. I initially gathered a big collection while trying to formulate my own policy. That collection grew over the years to include a variety of industries, types of companies (public or private), industry and approach to social media (proactive, prohibitive or neutral). The collection began to get overwhelming so I decided to get it organized. I figured I would just share it and make it available. There are 238 policies currently in the database. 15 Free Tools for Storing and Sharing Files Six months ago I shared a list of good file sharing tools for teachers and students.
