Following inDave Mileham and Kelly Tenkeley’s footsteps of assigning iPad apps to the different levels of the Bloom’s Taxonomy, I created the following table with apps that I have tested out and am recommending. (Click to see a larger version of the image) In order to make the cut, the app had to fulfill the criteria (from Wikipedia and according to the Blooming Orange’s verbs) set out for each level. You will notice that several apps that are in the same app category (ex. screencasting: ShowMe, ScreenChomp and ExplainEverything) are represented on different levels of the Bloom’s.

5 Applications for Analogies in eLearning Early in my training career, I became frustrated. I was designing and teaching technical support training. The typical process involved taking 25 people “off the street” and training them to be technical support representatives in two weeks. As the classes rolled on, I noticed a consistent pattern—there were always 1-3 people in every class who couldn’t catch on and would ultimately be let go (if not in training, then shortly after they reached production). As a trainer, I was completely frustrated by this. My job was to help people become successful—not to see them let go.

It’s an interesting graphic that actually places example iPad applications into Bloom’s levels of performance in the cognitive domain. Bloom’s Taxonomy Re-imagine & Digital Blooms: different ways to approach learning I’ve long been a fan of Bloom’s Taxonomy…not necessarily for all the ways it has been pushed into different fads throughout the years, but instead for the way that it helps me (and my students) think about the learning process. It helps me approach the learning process in a more holistic way, ensuring that I don’t camp out in one way of thinking and evidencing learning for too long. I think it is human nature to get excited about one way of thinking and suddenly everything we do falls into that. It can be a little bit like the new car that you purchased, you begin to see that car everywhere because you have a new awareness of it. I’ve noticed myself doing the same in teaching. Bloom’s Taxonomy helps me to keep myself cognizant of all the different ways to approach learning.

For our eight projects, the allocation of resources and development of a strong business case was an early indicator of success. The return of investment (ROI) varied across projects. Some saw a direct savings in printing costs, teaching hours, more efficient administration or communication. For others, there wasn't an easily quantifiable ROI, as the benefits were long term, like increased engagement, increased enrolments, increased retention and internal capability building.
