8 Things Everybody Ought to Know About Concentrating - StumbleUpon “Music helps me concentrate,” Mike said to me glancing briefly over his shoulder. Mike was in his room writing a paper for his U.S. History class. Mike made a shift about every thirty seconds between all of the above. Do you know a person like this? The Science Behind Concentration In the above account, Mike’s obviously stuck in a routine that many of us may have found ourselves in, yet in the moment we feel it’s almost an impossible routine to get out of. When we constantly multitask to get things done, we’re not multitasking, we’re rapidly shifting our attention. Phase 1: Blood Rush Alert When Mike decides to start writing his History essay, blood rushes to his anterior prefrontal cortex. Phase 2: Find and Execute The alert carries an electrical charge that’s composed of two parts: first, a search query (which is needed to find the correct neurons for executing the task of writing), and second, a command (which tells the appropriate neuron what to do). Firefox add-on DeSopa circumvents internet blacklisting if SOPA becomes law Dec 20, 2011 The House and Senate’s respective anti-online piracy bills, SOPA and PIPA, have stirred controversy over internet censorship. Firefox now has an add-on, DeSopa, that circumvents the bill’s DNS blocking. DeSopa, created by developer T Rizk, is a simple Firefox extension that allows internet users to revert to using a site’s IP (internet protocol) address, thereby bypassing DNS blockades of foreign websites such as The Pirate Bay. T Rizk told TorrentFreak, “I feel that the general public is not aware of the gravity of SOPA and Congress seems like they are about to cater to the special interests involved, to the detriment of Internet, for which I and many others live and breathe,” adding that it will serve as proof that SOPA will not work and hopefully help Congress come to its senses. Certainly, DeSopa will be a frustrating development for Rep. Good things.

How to Deal with Criticism Well: 25 Reasons to Embrace It “Criticism is something you can easily avoid by saying nothing, doing nothing, and being nothing.” ~Aristotle At the end of the day, when I feel completely exhausted, oftentimes it has nothing to do with all the things I’ve done. It’s not a consequence of juggling multiple responsibilities and projects. When I’m exhausted, you can be sure I’ve bent over backward trying to win everyone’s approval. I work at minimizing this type of behavior—and I’ve had success for the most part—but admittedly, it’s not easy. I remember back in college, taking a summer acting class, when I actually made the people around me uncomfortable with my defensiveness. After a couple minutes of verbal sparring, one of my peers actually said, “Stop talking. Looking back, I cut myself a little slack. Because I was desperately afraid of being judged, I took everything, from everyone as condemnation. I realize criticism doesn’t always come gently from someone legitimately trying to help.
