Internet Laboratories: Debate Sessions

Photographer: Carlos Cazurro In its trajectory, Medialab-Prado has sought responses to these matters through reflection and practices, and in order to explore them further, we propose a set of small laboratories for experimenting with and thinking about various topics related to the Internet: a series of interrelated spaces that also serve as dissemination spaces and generate an infrastructure that facilitates the production of other projects –their software, their licences, their forms of organization, etc.- all from a standpoint of the commons.

To start getting this process underway, MLP invited a group of people and initiatives to contribute their perspectives on the Internet as seen from the various areas where they carry out their practices, and to imagine how these ideas could be materialized in the physical space and programme of a citizens’ digital culture laboratory. The various approaches will be shared during these sessions. Program Program. Tíscar Lara. My name is Tíscar Lara and I am the Vice Dean of Digital Culture of Spain’s School of Industrial Organization (EOI, Escuela de Organización Industrial).

Tíscar Lara

I have been teaching digital literacy, educational technology and means of communication for over ten years in official centres for teachers’ education and in several postgraduate programmes in different Spanish universities. From 2004 to September of 2009 I have been a lecturer in Journalism for the Universidad Carlos III of Madrid. In addition to my BA in Journalism and my PhD studies in Multimedia, I hold an MA in Educational Television and an Expert Diploma in Artistic Education (all from the Universidad Complutense of Madrid), as well as an MA in ESL by the UIMP-Cervantes that I will complete this year. View of a workshop at Medialab-Prado Medialab-Prado publishes a call for all those interested in participating in Visualizar'11: Understanding Infrastructures workshop as a collaborator in one of the workgroups that will develop the selected projects.

CHAMADA PARA COLABORADORES

The collaborator is basic in the planning and development of the workshops at Medialab-Prado, thus these are conceived as spaces for collaborative work, knowledge exchange and theoretical and practical training. It is an environment in which there is a horizontal relationship among professors, developers and the collaborators. According to its field of interest, each collaborator can be part of the development team in more than one of the selected proposals bringing his/her knowledge and ideas to the workgroup and, at the same time, learning from the group and the teachers.

As it is specified in the rules, the names of the collaborators will appear in the project’s credits. The workshop runs from June 14 through 1st July. DADOS ABERTOS E PROJETOS VISUALIZAR'11. Visualizar INFORMAÇÕES. Data Visualization is a transversal discipline which harnesses the immense power of visual communication in order to explain, in an understandable manner, the relationships of meaning, cause and dependency which can be found among the great abstract masses of information generated by scientific and social processes.

Visualizar INFORMAÇÕES

The Visualizar project, directed by José Luis de Vicente, is conceived as an open and participatory research project around theory, tools and strategies of information visualization. Visualizar has the support of Bestiario, whose members have collaborated actively in every edition up to date. [Visualizar11] Processing Workshop at Medialab: Sat-06/26 thru Mon-06/28

I made an announcement yesterday to offer a Processing workshop at the Medialab with Massimo and Tom to those who are interested. I think it would be best if we separated the workshop into three sessions to give time for the content to sync in, as well as, to separate it into chunks that meet the different processing user's needs. So my proposal is to to limit the workshop to 2 hours, and to cover information that could help you with your Visualizar 11 projects. More information about the Visualizar11 mailing list. José Luis de Vicente

Since 2001 he has been the Deputy Director for ArtFutura, Spain’s leading art and technology festival. He has curated projects including the "8X8" exhibit on abstraction and videogames (CCCB, 2002), retrospectives of the work of Chris Cunningham (Sevilla CAAC, 2000) and Tomato (CCCB, 2001), and symposia on "Augmented Reality", "Living Objects, Sensitive Spaces" and “Aesthetics of Data” (Mercat de les Flors, 2004-2006), among many others. At ArtFutura, he also participates in the organization of RES-FEST, the global digital cinema festival held annually in over 20 countries. Presentation of Visualizar'11: Understanding Infrastructures. Visualizar'11: Understanding Infrastructures Infrastructures are the big systems that support global processes: from the infrastructures that produce and transfer energy and water to the ones that make possible global communication and mobility.

From the supply chain of goods and products to the removal chain, but also legal infrastructures that define relations among territories or the financial infrastructures that govern the circulation of capital among markets. Visualizar: introduction. What kind of images are appropriate for the needs of a global informational networked society – the society which in all of its areas needs to represent more data, more layers, more connections than the preceding its industrial society?

Visualizar: introduction

The complex systems which have become super-complex; the easy availability of real-time information coming from news feeds, networks of sensors, surveillance cameras; – all this puts a new pressure on the kinds of images human culture already developed and ultimately calls for the development of new kinds. The Turing Test for artificial intelligence is a reasonably well understood idea: if, through a written form of communication, a machine can convince a human that it too is a human, then it passes the test.

The elegance of this approach (which I believe is its primary attraction) is that it avoids any troublesome definition of intelligence and appeals to an innate ability in humans to detect entities which are not 'one of us'. CONVOCATÓRIA. > Introduction > Visualizar'11: Understanding Infrastructures > Call for Projects: Guidelines and submissions> Call for Papers: Guidelines and submissions > Links and references > Links to available data sources Introduction During the last years, the increasing availability of massive volumes of data in unprecedented numbers has opened new horizons in fields like scientific research, institutional governance, journalism and communication, or civic participation and activism. We need new methodologies and strategies to understand and make understandable these structures of information.

Natural Fuse (project site: naturalfuse.org) "Natural fuse" is a micro-scale carbon dioxide overload protection framework that works locally and globally, harnessing the carbon-sinking capabilities of plants. Generating electricity to power the electronic products that populate our lives has consequences on the amount of carbon dioxide present in the atmosphere, which in turn has detrimental environmental effects. The carbon footprint of the power used to run these devices can be offset by the natural carbon-capturing processes that occur as plants absorb carbon dioxide and grow. Programa pdf.
