Joe Keithley

At age 11, he began playing drums.[4] He would later take up the guitar and vocals. Musical career[edit] D.O.A. are known for playing peace rallies and environmental events. Keithley has been increasingly interested in politics, saying that shows where he can make a difference are more rewarding. In 2004, he published the autobiography I, Shithead: A Life in Punk.[9] He was also inducted into the Canadian Independent Music Hall of Fame.[3] He has also done solo work, releasing a mix of music and spoken word. In 2008, The Vancouver Sun newspaper named Keithley one of British Columbia's most influential people of all time.[12] During D.O.A.' He owns and operates his own record company, Sudden Death Records.[14] The recording company was started in 1978 as a DIY response to lack of interest from major labels. The Shantelles - Vancouver, BC (1963 - 1971)

Our group, Kentish Steele and The Shantelles, played mostly in western Canada -- mainly around the "lower mainland" of British Columbia, Vancouver, New Westminster, Burnaby, Surrey, Vancouver Island and, during the summertime, in the Okanagan. In addition to the usual jobbing gigs, we played regularly in some of the nightclubs and dance halls in the area.

I guess the most memorable of these for me were the Grooveyard in New Westminster and Oil Can Harry's and Lasseter's Den in Vancouver.Kentish Steele and the Shantelles emerged from an earlier group whose members included myself, Brian Pulham and Jim Patterson. Paul Dean, Brian Tingle and Kentish Steele came on board within a year to form the nucleus of the group. By about 1968 many of the northwest bands, both in the US and Canada, seemed to have moved away from the blues based R&B style dance music that I loved -- probably influenced by the British invasion. Black Top Records

When the contract ended in the mid-nineties, Passport Music took over distribution for a brief period of time; Chicago blues label Alligator Records distributed the Black Top catalog after that. After releasing well over 100 albums, the label folded in 1999.[2][3] Nauman Scott died in 2002.[3] Hammond Scott sold the rights of the catalog, and some releases were reissued on labels such as Varèse Sarabande, Fuel 2000 and Shout! Factory. In 2006, P-Vine Records in Japan acquired the worldwide rights to them, and has reissued a few of the CDs from the catalog. Artists[edit] Catalog[edit] Please see Black Top Records catalog. Alligator Records. Alligator Records is an American, Chicago-based independent blues record label, founded by Bruce Iglauer in 1971.

Alligator Records

Iglauer was also one of the founders of the Living Blues magazine in Chicago in 1970. Iglauer started the label with his own savings to record and produce his favorite band Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers,[1] whom his employer, Bob Koester of Delmark Records, declined to record. Nine months after the release of the first album, he stopped working at Delmark Records to concentrate fully on the band and his label.[2] Only 1,000 copies of the Taylor's debut album were made, whilst Iglauer also took over managing the group. Other early releases for the fledgling album included recordings by Big Walter Horton with Carey Bell and Fenton Robinson. In 1976, Koko Taylor's I Got What It Takes was nominated for a Grammy Award, and Albert Collins soon signed to the label.
