Need Branding That Transcends Cultures? Invent Your Own Language

Though it’s affiliated with Oxford, OUCRU is based in Vietnam and works with partners in Thailand, Indonesia, and Nepal. So when Ho Chi Minh City-based graphic designer Scott Lambert was invited to develop a brand for the center, it was immediately clear that any identity would need to read clearly across multiple nations and cultures. Lambert, who has worked across Southeast Asia on projects like this brand for Cambodia’s tourism ministry, responded by focusing on the glue that binds any community: language. Each element of the new identity can be read as a kind of translation. Whenever an English word appears--from an office placard to the OUCRU logo--it also appears as a system of color-coded shapes, each representing a specific letter.

To create a unified branding system with a common conceptual theme, each logo uses an upward hand to convey the group's commitment to "Caring for the Campus" and the values of responsiveness, service, and responsible guardianship. Each department is distinguished by a meaningful symbol within the hand and appropriate color, creating individual symbols which are unique yet retain a strong family look.

The university gave itself a major visual brand overhaul this year as they hired Chicago-based design studio Studio Blue to create a new primary logo system, university seal and sports logo and released them in parallel with the launch of their new website, designed by mStoner. A distinctive, modern-looking R logo is replacing the University’s current logotype. With its intersecting blend of greens and its unique folds, the new logo speaks to the ideas of diversity and community, important components of what the University stands for. “In the not-too-distant future, people will see the R and know immediately that it’s us,” said Roosevelt University President Chuck Middleton.— Press Release Sketches.

Marymount University Brand Evolution. UC Berkeley Brand Platform. UC Berkeley has long had a reputation as one of the most elite institutions in the world.

UC Berkeley Brand Platform

In a recent partnership with the university, our challenge was to create a platform that could weave together wildly disparate elements into the greater Berkeley brand story. Working from extensive research and strategic positioning, Ologie and Berkeley built a creative platform to rally and guide the brand’s many diverse users. This went on to inform a visual and verbal system that champions both flexibility and consistency. The platform’s theme, “Reach Further,” emphasizes Berkeley’s unmatched depth of talent, diversity of skills, and deep-seated drive to continually transform the world.

All of the supporting elements are authentic to the university, including a color palette that takes cues from area landmarks, local weather, and significant discoveries. Columbus State Community College Admissions Campaign. In working with Columbus State Community College, we recently launched something unusual: an admissions campaign aimed at students who will eventually transfer.

But it’s not as odd as it sounds. The “Go” campaign emphasizes the college’s agreements with dozens of four-year institutions (as well as its modest tuition rates) and encourages students to take the first step toward their educational goals at Columbus State. A philosophy piece helps prospective students envision themselves on campus and offers them a glimpse of the Columbus State experience. The campaign also includes a series of banners installed along walkways, and a wallscape eight stories tall featured prominently at the center of campus.
