The Best Animated Films of All Time, According to Terry Gilliam

For years, he produced wonderful animations for Monty Python (watch his cutout animation primer here) , creating the opening credits and distinctive buffers that linked together the offbeat comedy sketches. Given these bona fides, you don’t want to miss Gilliam’s list, The 10 Best Animated Films of All Time. It was published in The Guardian back in 2001, before the advent of YouTube, which makes things feel a little spare. George Lucas retiring to make 'hobby movies' Star Wars and Indiana Jones creator George Lucas has revealed plans to retire from mainstream film-making in favour of "hobby" movies. Lucas, 68, recently expressed an interest in returning to the experimental form of his early film THX 1138 and other projects he completed as a student at the USC film school. He said in January that he planned to take a back seat from the day-to-day business at his production company LucasFilm and has now confirmed he is stepping away altogether in a new interview with Empire magazine.

"I'm moving away from all my businesses, I'm finishing all my obligations and I'm going to retire to my garage with my saw and hammer and build hobby movies," Lucas said. "I've always wanted to make movies that were more experimental in nature, and not have to worry about them showing in movie theatres. " Lucas's disillusion with Hollywood is believed to stem from his difficulties in getting war movie Red Tails distributed last year.

"It wasn't particularly surprising because it is something new," Jackson told the Hollywood Reporter. But he added: "Ultimately, it is different in a positive way, especially for 3D, especially for epic films. " The 3D film has been shot at a rate of 48 frames per second, compared with the industry standard of 24 frames. Switch to high-frame-rate 3D movies may not be smooth - tech - 03 May 2012. Peter Jackson's The Hobbit was shot at double the usual frame rate, but the visual feel of a preview left the audience cold THE scene was set for a triumphant debut of a new movie technology at the CinemaCon conference in Las Vegas, Nevada, last week.

Cinema owners and movie critics waited to be wowed by a 10-minute preview of Peter Jackson's upcoming 3D movie, The Hobbit: An unexpected journey. Avengers Assemble disarms the critics. One down, two to go. Reviews are in for the first of 2012's three big comic-book movies, Avengers Assemble, and the critics are doffing their caps to Joss Whedon's carefully curated, funny and grand ensemble superhero flick. Despite weighing in at a bum-numbing two hours and 23 minutes, the film already looks likely to be one of the best reviewed mainstream movies of the year, with a current 96% "fresh" rating on the critical aggregator site rottentomatoes.com.

Where previous Marvel studios films occasionally dipped from the high standard set by 2008's barnstorming Iron Man, Avengers Assemble manages to give all the main heroes and villains on show an acceptable amount of screen time. Whedon's Hulk, as played by newcomer Mark Ruffalo in both human and giant green rage monster modes (via motion captured CGI), quite simply smashes it.

Only one review out of 26 compiled by Rotten Tomatoes dares to give Avengers Assemble a bloody nose. "The Avengers almost works. Film festivals: which is top dog? It has been a quiet few months on the film festival front.

Film festivals: which is top dog?

The last two biggies, Sundance and Berlin, were back in the depths of winter; but now things are suddenly getting interesting. Tribeca, the New York trendoid-magnet, has just started, and Cannes, the swanky Cote d'Azur schmoozathon, has reared its finely contoured head on the horizon. The UK is even getting in on the action, with the much-anticipated arrival next week of Sundance London, an offshoot of Robert Redford's indie-maven event in Park City, Utah. Sundance London is an example of that industry buzzword "diffusion", whereby name events set up franchises overseas. Tribeca has been doing it since 2009 in Qatar, co-organising the Doha film festival. Be that as it may, film festivals are asserting themselves ever more strongly; the competition between them is increasing as they jostle for supremacy.
