Meet Our People Archives - Smithsonian Insider Skip navigation Stay Connected Home / Meet Our People On the Importance of Doing Science With Your Kids I first met Kimberlee Leroux on a rare, rainy day on the beautiful Central Coast of California. We had both enrolled in a weeklong intensive course known as the California Naturalist Program. After dinner on the first night, all of the students, assorted ages and backgrounds, crowded around for introductions. As the circle made it’s way around, people had expressed interest in this training for a variety of reasons, yet each person seemed equally vehement about nature and it’s explorations.
The Brilliant Simplicity of New York's New Times Square Times Square starts at 42nd Street, between the H&M and the Walgreens, and stretches north for five blocks. Grow It Yourself a fantastic way to get kids eating and learning about food KEEPING children occupied, and getting them to eat fruit and vegetables, can be really tough for parents. But there's a simple way to successfully combine the two – by getting kids to plant seeds and grow and eat their own healthy produce. Teaching children 'food empathy' through sowing and growing means they'll have a better understanding of food and where it comes from, and that familiarity makes them much more likely to want to eat the food they've grown, says Dunmore East, Co Waterford man Michael Kelly, founder of the Grow It Yourself (GIY) movement. He says: "Getting children to grow their own food will help them to develop 'food empathy', which will follow them right through their lives. By growing some of their own food, they develop a better understanding of how food works, which is a proven lever to a healthier, happier life."
How to survive the Easter holidays - with kids of all ages These are to do with the idea of missing opportunities - missing out on 'making memories', making the most of things, spending quality time - and they can feel very burdensome. And Easter, if you ask me, is the worst for this kind of guilty soul-searching. The summer holidays are so long that we can let the whole two months go by on the promise of 'later'. Christmas has its own logic - visits, meals, presents, plus reliably bad weather, which means no huge pressure to plan fun outdoor activities. Gambling warning for children's online gaming Children playing online video games are being lured into illegal online gambling, experts have warned. The Gambling Commission said that parents need to be vigilant to the dangers of youngsters playing online who are enticed into betting on interactive games. A report found that there has been an increase in the popularity of unregulated third-party websites offering gamers the opportunity to gamble on the outcome of video game tournaments with the lure of in-game items such as decorative digital guns and knives, known as “skins”. Many of these sites, which a US report has estimated were worth between $3.9bn (£3.2bn) and $5.1bn last year, are illegal. Last month the Commission carried out a first-of-its-kind prosecution of two men running a website parasitic upon popular FIFA computer games.
