Open Professionals Education Network CC licensed (BY) Flickr photo shared by David Amsler modified by Paul Stacey Reusing existing Open Educational Resources (OER) can save significant time and effort. The OPEN partners recommend TAACCCT grantees invest up-front time finding OER to reuse rather than starting development of new educational resources right away. A significant benefit of OER is that they provide source material to build your development efforts around. No need to invest development effort in creating something that already exists. Online Learning Quiz Great! You’ll need to be able to download course material, get assignments and communicate with other students and your instructor. Fabulous! Education startup Coursera partners with 12 new universities, raises $3.7M and hits 1.5M students As we wrote back in April, there’s no doubt that the Internet is revolutionizing education, as more and more companies continue to emerge and alter the way we learn. We’ve kept a close eye on edX, Khan Academy, Academic Earth, P2PU, Skillshare and Codecademy, and rounding out that list is Coursera, one of the youngest of the bunch, which recently raised $16 million to launch with 37 undergraduate and graduate-level courses. Now, since starting off with the likes of Princeton and Stanford, Coursera is announcing 12 new university partnerships, $3.7M in equity investments from Caltech, Penn and existing investors, and a total of 1.5M student users from 190 different countries. Update: Coursea has clarified that 1.5M refers to the number of course enrollments, and that there are currently around 680,000 registered students. As far as funding goes, this additional $3.7M brings Coursera’s total funding to “over $22 million.”

Atlantis Remixed Transformational play involves the use of virtual worlds to help people learn and grow in a context where they can fail safely. Theory At its core, transformational play is a learning and empowerment philosophy that is grounded in the belief that each one of us is capable of, wants to, and deserves to achieve, great things. Unlike any other form of curriculum, these games offer entire worlds in which learners are central, important participants; a place where the actions of a ten-year old can have significant impact on the world; and a place in which what you know is directly related to what you are able to do and, ultimately, who you become. The theory highlights relations among the three interconnected elements of person with intentionality, content with legitimacy, and context with consequentiality. This stands in sharp contrast to the more traditional positioning of content as facts to be memorized, not as meaningful tools that are necessary for transforming a problematic situation.

Open Learning Initiative At Harvard Extension School, free and open learning is hardly a new concept. In fact, the Extension School was founded with this mission in mind: to create an affordable way for any motivated student to take courses at Harvard. We stay true to this mission today, offering several free courses and nearly 800 for-credit courses at reasonable tuition rates.

Here are some recently added bits and pieces: Attribution License The 'F' Word - 10 Tips To Get More Out Of Facebook In Education Even the mention of the word ‘Facebook‘ is enough to send a shiver down the spine of many educators. Privacy risks and ‘friending’ students scares many teachers off using Facebook for education. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The Facebook community, whether we like it or not, is enormous and it can be used in schools to do great things. Over the past few years, the social network has grown so far beyond just “adding friends”.

Introduction to Openness in Education Welcome to Introduction to Openness in Education. This course provides a broad overview of the ways in which openness impacts many areas of education – curriculum, instruction, learning, policy, technology, research, and finance, among others. My name is David Wiley, and I'm the designer of your open course. You can learn more about me at my website, davidwiley.org (Links to an external site.). The main goal of this course is to give you a broad but shallow grounding in the primary areas of work in the field of open education. Never fear, however – as you review the badges available for this course you’ll see that you have plenty of opportunity to dive deeper in the specific areas that interest you.

Productivity, Guest Columnist When you have a presentation to make, it's tempting to ask yourself right away, "What am I going to say? How much information can I fit into the allotted time? Which visuals should I use?" So, you may immediately dive into the process of selecting material, developing an outline, creating slides and rehearsing content. Although these steps are important, you risk heading off in the wrong direction unless you first consider the most important element of your presentation – the audience. As an effective presenter, your first step toward making a powerful, persuasive presentation is to define your audience.
