Breathingearth - CO2, birth & death rates by country, simulated real-time

The Breathing Earth simulation Welcome to Breathing Earth. This real-time simulation displays the CO2 emissions of every country in the world, as well as their birth and death rates. Please remember that this is just a simulation. Although the CO2 emission, birth rate and death rate data used in Breathing Earth comes from reputable sources, data that measures things on such a massive scale can never be 100% accurate. Please note however that the CO2 emission levels shown here are much more likely to be too low than they are to be too high.

A History of Climate Science Skeptical Science takes a different approach to Naomi Oreskes' Science paper who sorted her papers into "explicit endorsement of the consensus position", "rejection of the consensus position" and everything else (neutral). In this case, the backbone of our site is our list of climate myths. Whenever a climate link is added to our database, it is matched to any relevant climate myths. Therefore, each link is assigned "skeptic", "neutral" or "proAGW" whether it confirms or refutes the climate myth. This means a skeptic paper doesn't necessarily "reject the consensus position" that humans are causing global warming.

Is our Sun falling silent? "I've been a solar physicist for 30 years, and I've never seen anything quite like this," says Richard Harrison, head of space physics at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in Oxfordshire. He shows me recent footage captured by spacecraft that have their sights trained on our star. The Sun is revealed in exquisite detail, but its face is strangely featureless. "If you want to go back to see when the Sun was this inactive... you've got to go back about 100 years," he says.

Cryptographers chosen to duke it out in final fight - physics-math - 13 December 2010 A competition to find a replacement for one of the gold-standard computer security algorithms used in almost all secure, online transactions just heated up. The list of possibilities for Secure Hash Algorithm-3, or SHA-3, has been narrowed down to five finalists. They now face the onslaught of an international community of "cryptanalysts" – who will analyse the algorithms for weaknesses – before just one is due to be selected as the winner in 2012. The competition, which is being run by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg, Maryland, is a huge deal for cryptographers and cryptanalysts alike. "These are incredibly competitive people.

Earth Exploration Toolbook Awarded Science Magazine's Science Prize for Online Resources in Education (SPORE), September 30, 2011 AAAS Press Release What is the Earth Exploration Toolbook? Developed by teams of scientists and educators, the Earth Exploration Toolbook (EET) is a collection of online Earth system science activities. Catching the Wrong Species This article in NSTA’s December 2014 issue of “The Science Teacher” describes a classroom activity that uses engineering design to help students model modern fishing gear to minimize bycatch in the tuna fishery. (Bycatch is non-targeted marine species typically caught in fishing gear). The lesson uses the 5E instructional model (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate) and outlines a number of techniques to deepen student understanding of the concepts the model represents. The classroom model employs common household items (e.g., different types of beans, marbles, tennis balls, and buckets) to create a model of the ocean. Working in teams, students modify their “fishing gear” prototype at least three times to target more of the species they want to catch and to minimize catching non-target species. As students optimize their design solutions, they calculate the percentages of target and nontarget species caught in each of the phases of their design process.

Pencils, Pixels and the pursuit of Awesomeness THIS EXAMPLE SHOWS A traditional walk cycle animation where each frame is drawn completely by hand. What makes this particular animation advanced is that it requires not only drawing skills, but a sense of rhythm and timing. Ben makes it look easy, but with some dedication and practice, you can achieve great results. One of the most well-known and highly-praised resources for character animation is The Animator’s Survival Kit (Richard Williams). Williams explains everything you could ever want to know about all kinds of walk cycles, and it’s a reference no animator should be without. 1 Pick a starting point to draw.

Kimberly, people are still dying because they do not have the medicine they need because of "greed". You are trying to compare apples and oranges. Pollution is not so much a result of greedy business people as you call them (you're being to general) but it is definately greed playing a very big part in preventing our doing things that WE CAN do to address the problem. Just as important though is the part played by the avg. citizens of the industrialized world not wanting to let go of their SUVs and wasteful practices. There is no "give and take" as you put it. Life is out of balance. We kill innocent people all over the world to steal and control their resources. This is not balance....it is naked aggression....Murder...and it has to be stopped. by ahwei Oct 9

The level of salt is dicreasing in coherence for the seas. Salt is melting ice, so, is it interfearing the heating of the world? by schenz Oct 8

desalination takes energy . The reason for the rise in sea level is from the addition of fresh water from ice . Makes more sense to get fresh water from ice . Takes very little energy is comparison. And slows the addition that is increasing sea level rises at the same time . As for the food consumption . Over eating needs to be curbed . It adds to everyones health costs . It also strains the food supply. More efficient food production and distribution are required for survival . Food needs to be created closer to where people consume . People who muddle important issues like global pollution need to be recycled into filtering mediums for factory plumes ;-) Seriously people who think pollution is good have a screw loose ! Or are the people who are making money on the backs of others who are less fortunate . by mirlen101 Oct 8

for eating habit and rise in sea level.. i dont think it's necessary to change our eating habits. it's good though, obecity is scary, and fast food makes some people lazy (some, in other side fast/forsen food is a big help in rush schedule).and, about rises in sea level, it's just natural phenomena.. now earth is closer to the sun, thats also the reason of what now people call 'global warming' which in my opinion, doesnt make sense.. global warming because pollution. by kimberlyfendi Oct 8

I have been reading "Shapeshifting for Global & Personal Transformation" by John Perkins. He puts forth the shamans perspectives. Indigenous cultures did not procreate beyond what their environments could sustain comfortably and it was because of the "indoctrination of Christianity" that changed all that. They speak about how now they have more children and they live longer and the environment cannot support their numbers. They speak of how they too got caught up in greed and almost died out before they abanodoned their cities and returned to living "in harmony with the Godess Earth". Earth is the real Godess something we fail to see in our efforts to deal with this issue is that all "technology" requires "raw materials that have to be sourced from the Earth first". Personally I do believe the Earth will shake off the excess of humanity and I really don't mind if I am one of them. I honestly don't have a problem with that. by cdancer Oct 8

maybe we should change our eating habits and change what we eat. as to the rise in sea levels and the decline of sources of fresh water, what about desalination? by goldy Oct 8

Plus it doesn't help that we pay people not to grow the food, all because they want to make sure that food prices don't become different from what they are. But if you think about it if you controle the food then you have the world. So that's really what they are doing (having the world) That's why I say that we need to get into DNA, so that we can stop talking from the people that need it, plus taking the life from the world around and killing it at the same time, because every time we take whatever we take the chances for it to move on to the next stage in its future, as well as ours. by weyboom Feb 25

Throwing the baby out with the bath water again . This is why nothing gets done ! Someone looks at a system ,solution says it's not 100% perfect so lets not do it ! ;-/ What is the alternative just blow CO2 into the atmosphere while people argue about how underground storage isn't 100% effective ? The author of the article didn't seem to even grasp the method ! Do you or the author have an alternatives ? Or just naysayers coming up with negatives ! by mirlen101 Feb 24

What ever the point of view CO2 is BAD ! At least from an environmental point of view . It can be good in some ways . It's the overdosing that is bad . It becomes a toxin in higher quantities . So no matter what someone thinks of why the earth is warming or changing temp .CO2 still needs to be dealt with ! People seem to miss the point sometimes ! Pushing their own agenda and politics ! The point is > let CO2 spiral out of control you die ! Everyone Dies ! by mirlen101 Feb 23

Yes, that would be the only reason any one would did that, well I shouldn't say that the only reason, but one of the biggest reason I would have to say. But that's why I'm going to make sure that when I get my money that wouldn't be the only reason for people wanting to have such a change in their lives. by weyboom Feb 23

It is difficult to move in another direction without support moral and finacial . To take the unbeaten path . But once someone takes that leap of faith and has major success , others follow the crumbs ;-) by mirlen101 Feb 22

people wouldn’t want to change so the people that make stuff have to play the game of “What can I do to make money.” Will always stick with what people would want to do whatever they wanted; so no upgrade….leading it into forever down would into to the future doing the same thing over and over again. – The other way you could look at it is maybe it’s just that people just doing it the way they are doing it because that is the only way of doing it when you don’t have more people thinking outside the box and putting thoughts of other people, because any way you look at it, we are all in it together; ever being living in one world as time passes and as things happen and then have another happening at the same time forever in the same moment at different parts of the every moment. by weyboom Feb 22

That's why I think we need to be getting into genetics. So that we can just stop putting thing in our hands that really shoudn't be in or hands. by weyboom Feb 22

Strange how there seems to be fairly simple solutions to bringing Co2 levels down but they aren't being used by most large companies . They claim it costs too much . All the while raking in massive proffits at the expense of everyone . I speak of companies like big chemical and oil not putting in underground Co2 containment . Pumping Co2 underground where it is locked in rocks . They say it is an unknown outcome . Well we know the outcome of not doing it ! And companies that have done it have had great success . And made more money ! Fear of inovation is the biggest hurdle . Banks especially shy away from anything new . by mirlen101 Feb 22

I haven't explored it in detail, but it looks like a reality check site to me! Please....please....enough already on the offspring and the material consumption! by nomadsusie Feb 18
