Sarufutsu River “Jumping” with Itou Salmon, Researchers Report

Rand, Senior Conservation Biologist Chair, IUCN Salmonid Specialist Group In the field of conservation, we are often faced with the question “Is a certain species or population secure?” As I mentioned in my earlier blog this year, it is not an easy question to answer, particularly for river fishes that are elusive by nature. However, I am happy to report we are making substantial progress on answering that very question through our field studies of itou “ee-toe”, a mysterious member of the great salmon family found in east Asia.

The Aquaculturists: 20/06/14: Sir Bob Geldof: responsible aquaculture important in feeding the world

In his keynote address, the rock star turned poverty and environmental campaigner said he believes that aquaculture can play its part by bridging the gap between sustainable fisheries and the global demand for seafood but that the industry can only hope to achieve this when systems are responsibly implemented and managed. "We need to get to the point whereby aquaculture is not only a viable business but also a viable methodology for keeping so many of us alive," said Sir Bob. "When you do this, and you will, you will have helped deal with the signature issue of our time, which is inequality and disequilibrium. That is worth fighting for and it is worth getting right.

SFF chief executive Bertie Armstrong, said: “As an organisation we are apolitical and are adopting a neutral position in the referendum debate. But we have been charged by our membership to ask questions and seek clarity over issues raised in the debate, so as to enable individual fishermen to make their own minds up. “This is why we have written to the First Minister seeking clarification about some of the comments made in his Bruges speech.
