Researcher Makes Free Phone and Text Encryption Available to Egypt | Threat Level | Wired.com
Free phone and text-message encryption software that has until now been available mostly to U.S. users can now be used in Egypt, according to the security researcher who developed it. The researcher, who goes by the name Moxie Marlinspike, released the software last year for use in the United States through his company Whisper Systems , and has been working on making it available for international users. He hasn’t reached that stage yet. But with the recent wave of political protests in Egypt — where activists have relied on mobile phones to organize and document their struggle — he and his team were motivated to work on bringing the software to Egyptians quickly. “This release is targeted just for Egypt, but sets the stage for worldwide support,” Marlinspike told Threat Level.Mobile Applications Journalists (and You) Should Have on Your Phone
Updated: I added several resources as well as text to show device support. I also clarified the introduction a bit. A great discussion began on Quora asking “ What apps should every journalist have on their iPhone? ” Both professional journalists and recreational reporters jumped in on the discussion with enough suggestions to cover most bases when you need to capture news and publish it quickly from a mobile device. While not all are as useful to non-professional journalists, having some of the same apps available can serve the you well in the pursuit to be an active media participant. For this post, I’ve pulled from the best suggestions there and have added some of my own.MG Siegler is a general partner at CrunchFund and a columnist for TechCrunch, where he has been writing since 2009. update these local numbers work in Egypt 07777000, 07777770 plz spread the word Ok, it may sound crazy but I think I found a possible solution to connect to the internet even through the cut off. The solution is by going back to the basics, So instead of connecting to the local Egyptian ISPs (Internet Service Providers) we will try to by pass it and connect to REMOTE free ones via the phone network. We will utilize the same way that was used in the past, when the internet was provided through dial-up connections and 0777 numbers.

Although one Internet service provider -- Noor Group -- remains in operation, Egypt's government abruptly ordered the rest of the country's ISPs to shut down their services just after midnight local time Thursday. Mobile networks have also been turned off in some areas. The blackout appears designed to disrupt organization of the country's growing protest movement, which is calling for the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak. "[B]asically, there are three ways of getting information out right now -- get access to the Noor ISP (which has about 8% of the market), use a land line to call someone, or use dial-up," Jillian York, a researcher with the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, said via e-mail.

Welcome here new team members! Here are a few more guidelines to make this team simple and usefull. 1- English only: we want to make it aivalable to as many people as possible 2- Keep it to a small number of very usefull pearls 3- Organize and rename the pearls in the simplest possible way. The idea is not to cover everything: for french translation, more detailed approaches and so on, it's still possible to create as many other teams as we want, and I hope we will do so! Thanks to all! by Patrice Jan 31
( via pastebin...etc ) by anon Jan 31
