Climate Efforts Falling Short, U.N. Panel Says

But the experts found a silver lining: Not only is there still time to head off the worst, but the political will to do so seems to be rising around the world. In a report unveiled here, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change found that decades of foot-dragging by political leaders had propelled humanity into a critical situation, with greenhouse emissions rising faster than ever. Though it remains technically possible to keep planetary warming to a tolerable level, only an intensive push over the next 15 years to bring those emissions under control can achieve the goal, the committee found.

Keystone XL oil pipeline – everything you need to know

The Keystone XL project would expand an existing pipeline from the vast tar sands of Alberta to refineries in the US Midwest, nearly doubling the initial capacity and transporting crude oil deeper into America to refineries on the Gulf coast of Texas. Its proposed route would stretch about 1,660 miles, connecting Hardisty, Alberta to Port Arthur, Texas. It was first proposed in 2008. Tar sands protest group appeals to Obama after 3 members jailed.

President Barack Obama traveled to Michigan's Ingham County on Friday to sign the recently passed farm bill at Michigan State University, less than an hour's drive from the site of a major inland tar sands oil spill.

A group of local environmentalists hopes to use the president’s visit to warn him of the potential dangers of tar sands oil ahead of his final decision on Keystone XL and other proposed pipeline projects. Three members of the group — the Michigan Coalition Against Tar Sands (MICATS) — were arrested last July 22 and face up to two years in prison for locking themselves to excavators at a construction site of the Calgary-based company Enbridge near Stockbridge, Mich. The group said the action was aimed at stopping work on Enbridge's Line 6B — the same pipeline that ruptured in 2010 near the Kalamazoo River. 2013 Mayflower oil spill. The 2013 Mayflower oil spill occurred on March 29, 2013, when an ExxonMobil pipeline carrying Canadian Wabasca heavy crude from the Athabasca oil sands ruptured in Mayflower, Arkansas, about 25 miles northwest of Little Rock.

Approximately 12,000 barrels (1,900 m3) of oil mixed with water had been recovered by March 31. Twenty-two homes were evacuated.[1] The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) classified the leak as a major spill.[2] A reported 5,000−7,000 barrels of crude were spilled.[3][4] Exxon's Pegasus pipeline carries 95,000 barrels per day (15,100 m3/d) of crude a distance of 850 miles (1368 km) from Patoka, Illinois to Nederland, Texas. The pipeline is twenty inches in diameter and is buried an average of twenty-four inches below ground.[5] On April 2, 2013, PHMSA, the federal pipeline regulator, issued a corrective action order until repairs have been completed and all safety concerns addressed.[6] What was spilled?

Alberta's Tar Sands Will Now Be Regulated By Fossil Fuels-Funded Group. By Katie Valentine "Alberta’s Tar Sands Will Now Be Regulated By Fossil Fuels-Funded Group" The Alberta government is handing over the regulatory responsibility for the province’s tar sands industry to a corporation that’s funded entirely by Canada’s oil, coal and gas industry.

Alberta transitions environmental regulation to industry-backed group. Alberta, Canada has begun to shut down one of its energy and environmental regulators, replacing it with a group tasked with many of the same powers but completely funded by the oil, gas and coal industries.

Alberta transitions environmental regulation to industry-backed group

At least 75 environmental officers formerly employed by Alberta's government left this fall, and another 75 or so are expected to leave in the coming months and join the new regulator, according to the Edmonton Journal. The government also began handing over thousands of pages of regulations to the new Alberta Energy Regulator, which is now charged with overseeing the conservation of water and land in Alberta, while also promoting the economic benefits associated with oil, gas and coal production. Oil and gas permits used to be doled out by two regulators, including the Energy Resources Conservation Board. The new organization will get all of its funding from levying fees on oil and gas companies.
