Watch: New Video Highlights Chinese Female Mosques and Imams

The eight-minute video produced by journalist Kathleen McLaughlin and photographer Sharron Lovell explores the Hui Muslim culture through the story of one of its female imams, Guo Dongping. The idea of female-run mosques and female imams is foreign even to other Muslims. Guo highlights the challenges female imams face, as well as the major responsibility they bear for the education of future generations of Hui women.

"'Educate a woman' means educating a whole family," she says. Professor Shui Jingjun, studying Hui culture and female imams at the Henan Academy of Social Sciences, is also featured in the video, discussing the implications of young women learning about religion, and how to speak Arabic, while at the same time they are unable to make a living as an imam. A couple of years into my assignment in India, I went to Bihar, the country’s poorest state, to report on the development miracle that was said to be going on under its new government. I saw new roads, new schools, new toilets and newly minted health workers, all emblematic of the sort of rapid change that was supposed to be sweeping India.

Where prices rise and the value of women declines - Analysis. The hidden cost of inflation is that women become more vulnerable says Swarna Rajagopalan.

Where prices rise and the value of women declines - Analysis

Scores of women marching through the streets of 1970s Bombay, brandishing belans and beating steel plates with them, in protest against rising prices—the image of this novel and effective protest is what I recall as I start writing this. How do rising prices affect women in all the different ways in which they are economic actors? Entering alien territory—economics—to understand this, much of what I found addresses women primarily in their role as caregivers and then, as consumers of essential items. The rising price of food strains household budgets and consumption. A SEWA study in 2009 found as a result of food inflation, the number of meals a household consumed had come down. As wages rarely increase commensurate with prices, the challenge of providing enough to eat, means that a household has to trade off other costs. In general, inflation pushes households further into debt and poverty.

Gender Inequality Index

All too often, women and girls are discriminated against in health, education and the labour market — with negative repercussions for their freedoms. We introduce a new measure of these inequalities built on the same framework as the HDI and the IHDI — to better expose differences in the distribution of achievements between women and men. Gender inequality varies tremendously across countries—the losses in achievement due to gender inequality (not directly comparable to total inequality losses because different variables are used) range from 4.5 percent to 74.7 percent.

Countries with unequal distribution of human development also experience high inequality between women and men, and countries with high gender inequality also experience unequal distribution of human development. Day care centres come under the scanner

There is good patronage for the crèches, whether government-sponsored or run by individuals. But is there a regulatory mechanism to monitor them and how prepared are they to tackle emergencies? K. Shanmugavelayutham, Convener of Tamil Nadu Forum for Crèche and Childcare Services (TN-FORCES), says approximately 1,700 anganwadis and 300 voluntary organisations, including the Indian Council for Child Welfare, Women Voluntary Service, Women Indian Association and Guild of Service, are running day care centres with government support.

Under the Rajiv Gandhi National Crèche programme, the State Social Welfare Board has tied up with non-governmental organisations to run the crèches. Some anganwadis in South Chennai have ventilated rooms but more children are also enrolled. The private crèches run with the sponsorship of government organisations face another dilemma. Interview with Sridevi Raghavan on Daycare Preschool in India

Sridevi Raghavan of Amelio Child Care narrates her journey. Amelio Child Care is a daycare playschool based at offices, making it easy for working parents. By Aparna V. Singh After working with Ogilvy & Mather, the well-known global advertising agency, Sridevi Raghavan did her MBA at Harvard Business School, which is where her dream of starting up a daycare centre evolved. Aparna V. Sridevi Raghavan (SR): While I was working in the advertising industry, I used to see many of my senior colleagues struggling to manage their careers once they had their children; they would be begging the maid to stay late or trying to make other arrangements. Later, while doing my MBA at Harvard Business School, I participated in a business plan contest where I presented this concept. As it happened, a couple of judges loved the idea and it ended up getting funded by a Boston-based private equity firm!
