50 Watts

Milena and Vlada, the duo behind Yugodrom—a new blog focused on "graphic aesthetics from ex Yugoslavia"—have been unearthing gems from seventies and eighties issues of the science magazine Galaksija. They wrote to me suggesting that the "surrealistic, sci-fi-sh, serigraphic and absolutely amazing" illustrations of Nikolai Lutohin would be suitable for 50 Watts, and I am inclined to agree. The Russian artist Lutohin was born in Yugoslavia and did many illustrations for Galaksija. I've included ten below. updated 12/18/2011: I also love the magazine's covers (which often use graphics from famous American and British SF artists, perhaps uncredited) and for this post selected a handful from the 136 covers in Yugodrom's flickr set. 12/18/11 update: this uses a Bruce Pennington illustration (hopefully he got paid) 12/18/11 update: art by Chris Foss, famous British SF artist.

Illustrations from the book can be found here. I am reminded of a short story involving impossibly tall figures as thin as poles. Alfred Kubin. I encourage everyone to seek out Alfred's strange novel, The Other Side.

Alfred Kubin

The following is a detailed summary of the fantastical novel. "The Other Side tells the story of a German artist who is visited one day by a mysterious stranger claiming to be an emissary of old school friend named Patera. Furthermore the stranger states that this Patera is now the richest man in the world and has been building an idyllic community on a large piece of land he has purchased specifically for the purpose - this community goes under the name of the Dream Kingdom and has a capital city, Perle. Since taking possession of the land - and surrounding it with a large wall with a single gate - Patera has apparently been sending his servants on missions around the world to purchase specific objects of all kinds, seemingly randomly chosen, to furnish it.

The first thing they notice is that the sky is always grey - that and the fact that everyone and everything seems to make no sense at all. Photography: Soulcatcher Studio: Karl Blossfeldt: Urformen der Kunst: Photogravures: Exhibition & Sale. Karl Blossfeldt (1865-1932) was a German instructor of sculpture who used his remarkable photographs of plant studies to educate his students about design elements in nature.

Self-taught in photography, he devoted himself to the study of nature, photographing nothing but flowers, buds and seed capsules for thirty-five years. He once said, "The plant never lapses into mere arid functionalism; it fashions and shapes according to logic and suitability, and with its primeval force compels everything to attain the highest artistic form. " Blossfeldt's photographs were made with a homemade camera that could magnify the subject up to thirty times its actual size. By doing so he revealed extraordinary details within the natural structure of the plants. In the process he created some of the most innovative photographic work of his time. The photogravures that we offer for sale are in overall excellent condition.
