The flooding of Queensland in early 2011 affected more than two-thirds of the state, highlighting the unpredictability of Australian food production at a time of natural disaster.

According to The National Farmers' Federation, the floods will cost the agricultural industry around $700 million. The flooding, fires and cyclone of the new year makes two exhibitions Melting Moments by Janet Tavener and Still Life: The Food Bowl by Ken + Julia Yonetani especially poignant. The representation of food has long been a popular subject in art. Within the Western tradition, the still life has been valued for its formal qualities and the way it can work as a metaphor for other meanings. These contemporary still lifes cast and moulded from water and salt underline the issues of modern food production and consumption.

Julia Yonetani is an artist, writer, and researcher. Ken and Julia Yonetani’s work explores the interaction between humans, nature, science and the spiritual realm in the contemporary age, unearthing and visualizing hidden connections between people and their environment. Conceived in response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan in 2011, ‘Crystal Palace’ is comprised of 31 chandeliers. The 31 pieces signal the 31 nuclear nations of the world and the size of each chandelier corresponds to the number of operating nuclear plants in that nation.

The Singapore Biennale 2013 marked the completion of this series and its world premiere showing in Southeast Asia, a region without nuclear power plants. Solo Exhibitions include: Group Exhibitions include: Yonetani Salt sculptures lay consequences of salinity on the table. Hard facts ...

Yonetani Salt sculptures lay consequences of salinity on the table

Ken and Julia Yonetani's pieces, cast from salt from the Murray Darling region, speak of the crisis facing Australia's food bowl. Photo: Edwina Pickles ACCORDING to the Bible, Lot's wife was turned into a pillar of salt when she turned to look at the destruction of Sodom. Fortunately, Ken Yonetani's wife and collaborator, Julia, had a happier fate. She merely had to help the Japanese-born installation artist create pillars of salt for their latest exhibition, which also examines the potential collapse of a hedonistic civilisation. The couple - who represented Australia at the 2009 Venice Biennale - have spent months making sculptures out of groundwater salt at their studio in the Blue Mountains.

The four works are replete with references to European art history. Advertisement ''We used salt as a metaphor for life and death,'' Ken says.
