Council of Europe Language Policy Portal Languages are a fundamental aspect of people’s lives and the democratic functioning of society. In response to the needs identified in or by its member states, the Council of Europe has been working over the past few decades to compile a set of resources made available to education authorities and professionals and benefiting all Europe’s citizens (see milestones). Some of the end products have been widely distributed beyond Europe. The objectives of the Language policy Programme form part of the broader role and goals of the Council of Europe (in the context of the European Cultural Convention), concerning in particular the rights of individuals, social inclusion and cohesion, intercultural understanding and equal access to quality education. Language learners/users lie at the heart of the work of the Language Policy Programme. This work has now resulted in a multitude of resources, available on this portal and on dedicated thematic websites.

Big Is Best? Smaller Class Size Doesn't Always Benefit Students, Study Finds EAST LANSING, Mich. — It’s widely believed that smaller, more intimate, class sizes are better suited for student learning than larger classes. However, a new long-term study on math and science teaching trends finds that smaller class sizes don’t necessarily always lead to higher grades and achievements. Ultimately, the research team say, the effect of class size on student performance is dependent upon a number of additional factors such as country, the subject being taught, and various cognitive and non-cognitive skills.

Red-state politics in and out of the college classroom For two decades, I have taught U.S. women’s and gender history at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, a blue town in a blue state, marooned in an ocean of red. Bordered by Appalachia, the Mississippi Delta and the Ozarks, Southern Illinois is surrounded by the country’s poorest rural regions. Some of my students arrive from white farming communities and are the first in their families to attend college. They grow up on church, military, patriotism and traditional family, and they come from a world different from mine. I grew up in 1970s San Francisco, and my parents were leftists. As I prepared to teach about abortion and gay rights for the first time in 2003, I approached the classroom with trepidation.

The Lion King and Hamlet: Similarities and Differences Both families are royal families. Simba is the main character in Disney's The Lion King. he is the son of Mufasa, the king of the lions, which makes Simba a prince. Hamlet, from Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark is the son of the tragically murdered King Hamlet, which makes him a prince too. The uncle characters are very similar. Neuromyth 1 The brain is only plastic for certain kinds of information during specific ‘critical periods’-thereby the first three years of a child are decisive for later development and success in life. The concept of critical periods states that there are certain periods during early life when the brain’s capacity for adjustment in response to experience is substantially greater than it is in adulthood. This concept originated from observations by some of the pioneers in the study of animal behaviour. For example, Konrad Lorenz examined a dramatic example of a critical period: imprinting in birds. Newly hatched birds will become indelibly attached, or imprinted, to almost any prominent moving object in their environment, normally their mother. Such imprinting can only occur during a critical period soon after hatching.

The Teacher’s Role in Finland's Phenomenon-based Learning “When you say that phenomenon-based learning has to be student-centered, teachers think I can’t do anything, I just have to step back and let the students do their thing,” Elo said. He hasn’t found that to be true. Teachers have to make sure students know the foundational knowledge they need on a given topic to even consider developing a research question within it. They need to teach students how to craft appropriate research questions that can lead to interesting and engaging, and hopefully even original, research opportunities. And they need to pause the student-directed investigations to teach and model the skills students should be using on their own along the way.
